Uploading a header without having to crop it?

Is it possible to upload a header without having to crop it?

I have in the past. My current blog (The Webcomic Overlook) is currently showing a header that I merely uploaded at the specified dimensions for the Twenty Eleven format (1000 x 288). If I remember correctly — and this was done last year, I believe — by sizing it to the correct dimensions, you could bypass the cropping stage.

I had planned on uploading another header. I did the same thing: I sized it to 1000 x 288. This time, though, it takes me to the cropping portion of the header upload. You are prompted to select the cropping area (in my case, the whole picture), and then instructed to publish it.

The result, though, is an image that is of lower quality than the one I uploaded. The image I’m trying to upload as a header is a simple one, but there is still a noticeable loss of resolution.

As a result, I’m just going to use my previous header for now. (If you pull up the site, the header you see will be my previously un-cropped one.)

I have the same issue. My header images are correctly optimized and pre-sized to the 1000 x 288 pixel header dimensions required for Twenty Eleven. However, since last week when I upload them I’m being compelled to crop them, despite the fact they do not require cropping.

You are also correct about the loss of image quality whenever the cropper comes into play. I have flagged this thread so Staff reveal why this has changed and what we can do to regaining the ability to upload correctly sized header images without the cropper coming into play.
