Uploading and editing the Title, Caption, and Description
-
Let’s say John Doe uploaded a couple of images of his dog.
John Doe selects to edit the image information by first adding his Title:
This is my dog, Benji.
Then John Doe adds his Caption:
John Doe’s Dog.
Lastly, John Doe adds his Description telling the viewers all about his dog Benji.
What John Doe doesn’t know is that to get the Caption to work when the image is clicked on in the gallery post. He needs to add his Caption: of
John Doe’s Dog
to the Description field too.
Now the Caption: of
John Doe’s Dog
is acting more like Title.
When John Doe first uploaded his image he entered his Title as
This is my dog, Benji.
So now it has two titles.
This is defeating the purpose of ever adding the Title and Caption when John Doe uploaded his images in the first place.
I hope this gets fixed so as not to confuse new users.
It can become very frustrating. -
Hi,
What John Doe doesn’t know is that to get the Caption to work when the image is clicked on in the gallery post. He needs to add his Caption: of
John Doe’s Dog
to the Description field too.
On my primary site, which uses a retired theme, I find that captions added to the gallery images display on each image regardless of the style of gallery chosen (slideshow, thumbnail grid, tiled mosaic, tiled columns, etc.), AND captions also display in the gallery carousel.
I find, on the other hand, that a Description added to a gallery image is completely independent of the image Title and Caption. The Description will display on an attachment page, but only if that image is linked to an attachment page. I find that Descriptions do not display in the gallery itself, regardless of the style chosen, or in the gallery carousel.
In my tests I failed to replicate the behavior that you describe, but I’m uncertain whether that behavior is theme dependent, so I’ll tag the topic for staff attention. Staff will respond here.

On my test with a current theme, here’s what I see:
The alt text is there on the post, too. I’m not seeing it on the gallery pop up. That may have been a design decision. I can ask about that if you’re concerned.
This should work for most themes (except perhaps very old ones) because it’s a Jetpack feature.
If it’s not working for you, could you link to the affected post so we can take a look?

He needs to add his Caption: of
John Doe’s Dog
to the Description field too.
I should have also added that in my tests it was unnecessary to add a Description in order for a Caption to display. The Caption and the Description of a gallery image appear to be completely independent of each other.

To be clear, in my case I had separate captions and descriptions. Both showed up fine.
Are you saying the description does not show up if the caption is blank? Or that they have to match?
-
I just tested; I see a description whether or not I’ve set a caption, and whether or not they match.
Please send a link to the post or page so we can go into this further. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply, Sorry for the delay.
At the time I was using the WordPress app. I’m no longer using it now. When I asked a support question one person said, I need to add the caption to the description field in order to have it shown.
So from now on as soon as I upload an image, I’ll add the Title, Caption, and Description and not worry about adding a caption when the image is added to a post.
Thanks again.

Ahhhh okay. I didn’t realize you were using the app, and had been testing in a browser. If you’ll let us know which app you were using, we’ll do further testing on our end.
