uploading backgrounds

Only if you have bought the CSS Editing upgrade can you style the blog in that (and other) ways.

If I have one of the default themes but I would like to change the regular, drab white to something else how would I go about doing that? I have the upgrade I just don’t know where to go from there. Can anyone help me?
-
Do you know how to use CSS at all? There are some online tutorials such as the one at tizag.com that can help you learn. Otherwise, you’re pretty much on your own. Staff doesn’t provide CSS support and there are only a couple of people in the forum who really know what they’re doing with it.

You would need CSS editing experience, and the CSS upgrade to change background color, or to add a background image.
-
Okay, I’ve got the upgrade. I have a little CSS experience but I don’ t know if there’s a certain code that I need or what?
-
What theme are you using? You should be able to have a look at the stylesheet and then identify the background you want to change. You’ll need something like
body {
background: url(‘putyoururlhere’);

I once found this WordPress layout generator where you can add a background and do just about anything to the look of your blog. I’ll try to find it again. But yes you need to purchase the CSS upgrade.
And remember that when dealing with CSS that our blogs might look different in other browsers mostly on IE. Sanjidabd found this great tool to see what our sites look like on other browsers:

The wordpress generator blog link is this one http://www.yvoschaap.com/wpthemegen/ and it was sunburntkamel that gave us the browsershots link before sanjidabd became a blogger here. I have used it many times. It usually takes between 20-45 minutes and then you can see how your blog is displayed when viewed through different browsers.

Gosh I just did a search for browsershots and found that our ex-moderator provided that link prior to sunburntkamel providing it. However, it really doesn’t matter does it? We can all find links on the internet to enable us to see what our blogs display like in different browsers. :)
