Uploading files for viewers to download
-
I am relatively new to WordPress, and am using it as a simple software to put my resume and design portfolio on the internet. My blog address is http://katelynmiller.wordpress.com. I am hoping someone can help me with what I figured would be a simple issue. I want to be able to upload my resume and portfolio which are both in PDF form, however, I want a viewer to be able to click on the link and DOWNLOAD the files, not have them open in new windows for immediate viewing. In fact, I’d like to have both options, however being able to have my portfolio downloaded is my priority. I’ve poked around forums and my question isn’t quite answered. If anyone can help, I’d very much appreciate it! Thank you!!

Unfortunately, or fortunately, that depends on the reader’s browser settings. It’s not something you can control (at least not on wordpress.com, it may be possible on a self-hosted wordpress.org blog). If I click a document link it will open – or ask me if I want to save – depending on what I set my browser to do by default. The user decides, not you, what to do with the document.

It seems like the only option I’m given is for a file to open in a new browser window, though. When I go on to my own website and click on the link I am not given an option what to do with it, it automatically opens the file in a new window (which takes forever to load since it is such a large PDF file). If this is not an option, is there a way for me to attach a different link for download only??

If it is large, it wise to tell your readers the size, e.g. “PDF, xxMB” and suggest that they right-click and “Save As”.
