Uploading Image, showing up as a blue question mark

When trying to insert media into a post, the jpg file I uploaded is showing up as a blue question mark. This has happened to me before in the past and I just re-tried uploading a few times and it worked (I always figured the file got messed up during upload) but every time I try deleting and re-uploading same thing happens. I must be doing something wrong or I have something set wrong? I don’t know. Need help! Please! Thx :)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

What is the URL of the image? How large is the file? How much storage space do you have left for media on the blog?

You are currently using 1.1 GB out of 3.0 GB upload limit (35%)

^that’s including the 2 files I tried uploading

there are the two URLS (same image, tried uploading 2x different file names):

http://nicoleausten.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/michaela.jpg (if I view it, its just a blue question mark in a box)

http://nicoleausten.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/michaelahome-blog1.jpg (I get this msg when I try to view this one: Hi there. You seem to be lost.
It looks like nothing was found at this location. Perhaps it was there but now it’s gone. Maybe try one of the links below or a search?)

i know the file size is large, but i don’t think it is the largest thing i’ve uploaded. i’ve done quite a few successfully. it says 6562 x 55377 – not sure how to make the file smaller (not very tech savy over here lol), i use an extension in PS to create one jpg of multiple images to uploaded

Well, I can open neither one because they are too large for my computer to open. Optimize your images for the web BEFORE uploading them. Set them to 72dpi and no wider than your theme column, otherwise you’re just wasting space and clearly going to run out in no time at all.

Yea….well I’m an idiot, I just realized the file was 1.02 – oops!

I have to figure out how to get the file sizes smaller while still making sure the images are large on screen & crisp. I am def going to run out of space really fast. Like I said, NOT TECH SAVY at ALL! Just getting the hang of all of this. Thank you!

Each file seems to be 199 MB – that is probably part of the problem – take a long long time to load

Re “large on screen & crisp”: Contrary to what you may be thinking, you don’t get best quality when you upload very large images, you get best quality when the images aren’t scaled down by WP and/or the browser. See this post of mine for an example:
    http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/01/16/image-quality/

So, if you want best quality on the post, you should use an image editing application to scale down your images to 560 pixels wide, because that’s the maximum that can fit in the main column of the theme you’re using.
If you’re interested in best quality when one clicks the inserted version to see a larger view, 6562px again is absurd: no user has a 6562px wide screen. The majority of internet users have screens that are 1200px wide or less. And when your composite images are very long you lose anyway, because no matter what the width the images will be scaled down to fit the height of the browser window.
