  How do I upload an image from my computer to the image widget?

  You upload it to your media library first, then you put the URL of that uploaded image into the image URL field in the image widget.

  that CAN’T be the only way to insert images into a blog post. Why isn’t there an ‘upload/insert image’ button in the visual editor bar?

  This thread is about the image widget, not about posts or pages.

  There are buttons for uploading/inserting images into posts and pages right in the visual editor. A search for “images” in the support pages would have brought you the following link, which is the second link listed in my reply above.
