Uploading Lovecraft feature images via Flickr

  • Unknown's avatar

I already upload all photos on my blog posts direct from Flickr by copying the url and embedding this into the post. This works extremely well but I have never worked out how to do this for my feature images. Uploading these images from my camera roll is using a lot of space, a minimum of 2mb per photo but often more. Despite scaling the photos, WordPress keeps the original so I cannot save space. Does anyone know the procedure for embedding the Flickr url into the feature image so that I could use that for all my images. Hoping someone can assist me. Thank you.

  • Hello @marioncollinson,

Have you already tried using the Set Featured Image option from the right side menu of your post editor?

    1. On your post editor, you will find menu on the left. Click Set Featured Image button under the Featured Image section.
    2. New window will appear for you to upload your image. Click the arrow down button next to Add New on the upper right hand side.
    3. Then select Add Via URL. See screenshot here.
    4. Paste the image URL of the image you wish to upload on the box provided.
    5. Then click Upload.

You can also find more information from this link.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

    Regards,
    Rose

  • Hi there,

The insert via URL option is not available for featured images, as a featured image has to be in the site’s media library first, before you can set it as a featured image. Featured images cannot be hotlinked, and they can’t be set before the image is in the library.

Also note that if you use Add via URL in the new editor when adding images to posts and pages, that causes the image to be imported to the media library, not merely hotlinked, so it doesn’t actually save any space at all. To just hotlink to images you’ll need to use the WP-Admin editor, and otherwise the best way to save storage space is to resize your images on your computer before you upload them to the library.

  • Hello @kokkieh,

Please correct me if I did not understand this correctly. I tested it on my test blog, before sending the instructions with screenshots.

I was able to add featured image via URL, and I used an outside image link (not uploaded to my media library.)

Please see screenshots below per step:

Or is it just the same as I am uploading the image to the Media Library, so I could use it as Featured Image. Hence, it’s consuming space.

    Thank you so much.

    Rose

  • Ah, I stand corrected. Then it appears the Add via URL is now available for featured images as well. Thanks, Rose.

In that case, @marioncollinson, can you please provide the Flickr URL(s) that aren’t uploading as featured images for you? Unless you are using the WP-Admin editor, which case it’s expected that the Add via URL feature is not available for featured images, as that editor hotlinks images instead of uploading them.

Or is it just the same as I am uploading the image to the Media Library, so I could use it as Featured Image. Hence, it’s consuming space.

If you add via URL in the My Sites editor the image is uploaded to the media library, and will take up space in the library. If you add via URL in WP-Admin, the image is just hotlinked, so it’s not uploaded on our end.

  • Thank you so much, @kokkieh! You’re the best. :)
