Uploading MP3 Files to Page

  I’m trying to upload mp3 audio files to my project page. However I keep getting the error message ‘File could not be uploaded because the file type is not supported’ Is there another format that would work better for uploading or do I need to upload my files through a third party site and insert the link. I have the free version of WordPress and do not wish to buy the premium version.
