Uploading PDF files

  • Unknown's avatar

My WordPress site contains dozens of PDF files which I have copied from my laptop file directory, which until last month I was able to access through ‘add’, which then allowed me to browse my directory. Now I can’t do this anymore, so how do I add new files, or replace old ones ?

  • Hi, could you confirm which site you need help with? Also, what’s happening when you try to add PDFs?

And, if you add them here does it make a difference?

Thank you – that’s a really helpful shortcut.

Yesterday I made the mistake of trying the new editor format and couldn’t find any way to upload anything at all. I managed to get back to the old format and then was only offered upload via URL, but not browse.

I resolved it by logging off and back on again.

I hope older users like me will not be eventually forced to migrate to the new format.

  • In the block editor you can use the File block to upload files to your site and have them display as a downloadable link.

    Share or Embed Downloadable Files

You can also just drag-and-drop the file from Windows Explorer directly into the editor and it will upload and insert a file block automatically.

In the case of PDF files, we now also offer the option to embed the file directly on your site, so people can read it there without leaving your site. To do that, upload it to the media library first, as @supernovia explained above, and then paste the link directly into a new line in the editor:
