Uploading PDF Media: Want to keep the older link

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I’m uploading my edited resume.pdf and it is getting auto renamed to resume1.pdf and so on. I have deleted resume.pdf from Media Library, but it’s incrementing the value as before [i.e. resume2.pdf –> resume3.pdf], what should I do, please?

I want to rename newer files as older resume.pdf, because, the link is already indexed in google search engine.

Thank you very much for the help.

you can edit the title of your uploads by going to dashboard -> manage -> media library then click the title of your upload to edit.

Thank you for the reply. Actually I want to retain my old link “http://raqueeb.wordpress.com/files/2008/10/resume.pdf” where wordpress is auto renaming the file name to resume2.pdf –> resume3.pdf and so on.

Every time, before uploading the final version of resume.pdf, I do delete the previous file [i.e. resume2.pdf, resume3.pdf …]

The trouble is, wordpress is doing that automatically, without leaving me choices to rename it. Googling on this, I thought that it might take little longer as synchronization between servers is needed. I deleted all the copies of resume.pdf and waited overnight, it still is auto incrementing to resume8.pdf!

Do we have a solution on that, please?

If you are changing the content I do not think the link will remain the same.

I find that it is a heck of a lot easier to edit the link.

Thank you for all the reply. I’m updating my resume.pdf file for sometime now and google did index the following link ….

    Click to access resume.pdf

Now, every time I’m updating the resume.pdf and it does look like following links ..

    http://raqueeb.wordpress.com/files/2008/10/resume1.pdf
    http://raqueeb.wordpress.com/files/2008/10/resume2.pdf

    http://raqueeb.wordpress.com/files/2008/10/resume10.pdf

How do you think google will keep pace with that?

I finally understood that wordpress doesn’t support that, is there any workaround, please?

Like renaming the file after uploading?

    Thanks for the replies!

Like renaming the file after uploading?

i believe i suggested that answer in my reply…

I too would like to upload a file (a pdf in this case) and have it overwrite the older one with the same filename. I have a menu.pdf that I would like to replace with a newer copy. At the moment if I upload menu.pdf the filename gets changed to menu1.pdf, menu2.pdf etc. This filename change then means I need to update all links on other sites to point to the new file … not the most efficient way as you can understand.

Is there something we are missing … some plugin or different way of doing things?

    Thanks.

@capewinebar – if you are asking about the blog in your user name, you are in the wrong forum. We use different software here and our answers will not apply to you. Head over to http://wordpress.ORG/support/

@vivianpaige – no not actually asking about the blog in my username … that is my main site … I have a wordpress.com blog capewinebar.wordpress.com) and that is where I am having issue with the upload feature. Thanks for the reply though.

Should a solution not be available I may actually have to download/install/hack a copy of wordpress and integrate with the main site … was not really wanting to go that way though coz I want the benefits of having a full wordpress.com blog.

What is the best way to add this type of request to some sort of “Suggested Feature List” compilation? I’d imagine a simple checkbox on the upload form to “Overwrite existing file with same name” + server side code to accomplish that would be flexible enough for most people (even if most never use it on a day to day basis).

    Hi everybody,

    @raqueeb
and others: I’ve got that same issue, too: filename on server changes on every update I upload even if I delete the old file before. (btw, for me sometimes the browser even crashes while attempting to upload such a file)
Anyway, imo the real problem is the people aren’t really understanding that’s a problem.
I folded a lot of forum entries all with replies like “yeah, you can change the document title” and “you can rename the file locally before upload, just append some characters” etc.
Guys, not being able to keep a link for a file that may change in future is a problem and I don’t see any reason for that limitation.
So please anybody fix this or explain, why you want this “feature”.
    Regards,
    P
