URGENT: Error 500 has taken down site and admin access

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I’m getting an error 500 notice when attempting to get to my site and its admin area. I’ve had people in different countries using a variety of devices attempt to connect to the site and they’re getting the same error notice.

The only thing I’ve done today on the site is run plugin updates, so I’m assuming it was one of those that has caused this issue. Without being able to log in, though, I can’t actually do anything to fix this, like disabling them in turn to work out which one caused the issue.

Do any of you clever people have any ideas as to what I could do?

    TIA :)

Hi there, what is the URL of your website?

    Hey :)

It’s ixcanaan.com. We’re a charity based in Guatemala. I’m volunteering here and have made the site but I’m far from a WP expert so any advice would be very gratefully appreciated!

    Hi,

If you have access to either the web host’s control panel or FTP access to the site you can undo this. Using either the file browser in the web host’s control panel or a FTP program, open up the wp-content folder on your server. In it you’ll see another folder called plugins.

If you change the name of plugins to plugins1 that should deactivate all of your plugins and allow you to log back into the admin. After that go to the plugins section of the WordPress admin. Keep that open and then using the file browser or FTP program, change the name of the plugins1 folder back to plugins.

Next up is turn the plugins back on, one at a time inside the WordPress admin’s plugin section. The site may go back down when you get to the one with the error or conflict. If it does, use the FTP or file browser to open up the plugins folder and then change the name of that plugin’s specific folder. Each plugin will have their own folder. That will turn it off. You can then continue turning the other plugins on, one by one and see if you have any other trouble.

Once you know where the trouble is you might reach out to the plugin’s author and see if they can help out.

    Hope that helps out!

    Hi 3sonsdevelopment :)

Thank you for so much detail. I can look into these options soon but basically am working on the pretty likely assumption that I won’t have access to either of those.

Is there another option that you know of?

    @ixcanaan Hi,

It appears that your website uses the self-hosted version of WordPress rather than WordPress.com, which is what this forum is designed to help with. Note the difference here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

You may be able to find help here: https://wordpress.org/support/ or alternatively contact your hosting provider.

    Hope this gets fixed soon!

    Hi Torres :)

Thank you. Not sure if this is counter to what you’re saying, but the site is hosted by justhost, so I’m in contact with them now.

If your site is hosted with Justhost, contacting them is a wise idea! :)

Guys, thank you so much. With advice from both of you, I’ve fixed the problem. Really so grateful – you’re brilliant. Thanks :)
