URGENT PLEASE – How to go from private to public?

  • Unknown's avatar

I need now to have public access to my site, but have set it on private blog for the past 2 years. I have a team of reviewers waiting to use the site before I finalise a final draft of a publication. There seems to be no options under my privacy settings for opening the site to the public (without login) while still having a secure administration log in. I don’t know how to do this,

    Please help.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Baldrick,

Logging into the Dashboard will always be secure. After looking into your account, I found that your site has been set to public. You can change these settings by going to Settings > Reading in your Dashboard. You can change the selections next to “Site Visibility:”.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

    Hi Grace,

Thank you for the reply. Yes, I finally found the correct settings sometime after I posted the inquiry.

I was expecting there would be a ‘log-in’ on my site but there is none. Does this mean I only have the option to invite to post onto my site?
I would prefer a log in button be visible on my site.
Please advise how I am able to do this.

    Hi Baldrick,

If you would like to add editors to your site you can do that through this support guide:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/

Please view what each role is able to do before sending out invites. If you have any further questions about roles, please let me know and I’d be happy to help!

    Cheers!

    Hi Grace,

I think you misunderstand my question.

Is there anyway I can put a login button on my site?

I would like to see one on the first page, the side menu, or at the top. Somewhere. Is this possible, given the theme I have chosen (the Zoren theme), or is it not possible on WordPress sites?

    HI Gerard,

Do you want to set your site to Private? Then your readers would need to log in to view the site.

You can do so by going to Settings > Reading in your Dashboard. Next to Site Visibility, please select: I would like my site to be private, visible only to users I choose.

Click Save Changes and you should be set!

Let me know if that’s not what you’re looking for.

    No.

I really really do not want to set it on private.

I would like to have it open to all.

I simply want to have a log-in button on my site where all can see it, and can register as well.

I’m sorry, but I’m a bit confused as to what would you like this log in button to do? Normally a login would be needed for privatized content. A login would not be needed for public content as that would add an unnecessary barrier to viewing your site.

If you want people to be able to follow your blog and receive email notifications every time you publish a post, you can add a Follow Blog widget to your site. Check out the link for more information.

    I am a newbie :)

I just can’t see how this system works for those I have invited to post on my site.

I would like those I have invited to contribute, to be able to login on my site. That is I want a login button on EyCuz.com. Also, anyone who wishes to register to post, to be-able to do so by clicking a button on my site.

Is this not possible to have using WordPress.com?

    HI Gerard!

Ah I see! Thank you for clarifying! The only way to have people contribute to your blog would be by inviting them as a user of your blog. As I mentioned above, you can review the user roles here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/

There are multiple roles that these users can play, so please review them carefully before they are added. What happens is – this user can then login through their own WordPress.com account to access your blog and create posts.

As for anyone who comes by your site and wants to contribute to it, what you can do is put a Text Widget in your sidebar and tell the reader to contact you so you can send him/her an invite. You wouldn’t be able to add a link that would automatically add them as a user of your blog.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions about this.

So everyone posting to my site will need a WordPress account. Okay, I will work with that.

    Great information about text widget.

Thank you for the quick reply.
