Add topic to favorites
Im trying to import the exported file from wordpress.com and I get a message saying its empty? Is there any other way to generate an export file?

There are quite a few posts in this forum about exporting from wordpress.com to wordpress.org. The export file from Admin => Manage => Export will be the new wordpress export format and will work with 2.1.x versions of wordpress only. As well, maybe do a search over in the wordpress.org/support/ forums as it is now in the realm of self-hosted support and not wordpress.com hosted support any more. There are many people over there to troubleshoot with you, but the export file you get off wordpress.com shouldn’t be empty.

What size is the file? Can you open it in a text editor? Are you trying to import into the latest .org release?

yeah I can open it in Firefox and I can see all the code/data

So the xml export file isn’t “empty” after all. Are you trying to import into the latest .org release? The answer to this question is important so please provide it.

Let’s do this because all we’re doing is guessing.

Zip it up and email to me and I’ll take a look and see what’s occuring.

This is so not working for me! I don’t know why wp.com to wp.org is not functioning properly. Any ideas?

It’s real hard for any of the volunteers to help you with ideas when they don’t know what the problem is. Could you please provide some details, what you tried, error messages, etc? Otherwise all we can do is guess and that would not be efficient for anyone. Thanks.

Remember guys you can open an xml file in a text editor and see what the heck is in there. And next up in my experience some error messages on the import seem to be false. It can be best just to keep going as far as you can.
