URL change issue
-
Hello,
I recently installed the “Classic Editor” plugin, to get quick toolbar access to some basic editor features I couldn’t see in the new editor, such as bullet points and headings and so forth.
It works great, but doing so seems to have changed the URL of my blog from
dotbigbang.wordpress.com
to
dotbigbang.wpcomstaging.comIs there a way to reinstate the previous URL? I’m worried visitors will think this odd URL is unsafe or dodgy in some way.
Thanks.
John

Hi there!
The change has nothing to do with the plugin. The URL changes when you upgrade to a Business plan and are using custom plugins. Sadly, this cannot be changed and it is recommended to use a custom domain instead.
You can read about this here:
https://wordpress.com/support/changing-site-address/#a-note-on-wpcomstaging-com-addressesIf your site is on the WordPress.com Business or eCommerce Plan and has installed custom plugins or themes, it will receive an .wpcomstaging.com address instead.
Hope this helps!

Hi John,
Installing plugins on the Business Plan changes your site’s URL, because business plan sites run on different infrastructure than regular WordPress.com sites. But once you use the free domain included in your plan, the underlying wpcomstaging address will be completely invisible to your site visitors.
However, installing a plugin wasn’t necessary at all here – the classic editor plugin comes pre-installed on all WordPress.com sites, including free sites, and you can switch to it any time you want.
That said, the block editor also offers many more formatting options than the classic editor ever did. For the two specific items you mentioned, in the block editor you just type
/listto insert a list block, and/headingto insert a heading block, and each of those blocks then contain several settings you can use to further format the content. With the list block, for example, you can switch between bulleted or numbered lists, and you can even change how the bullet looks, all from within the editor and without needing to use any code. And you don’t need to know what to type for a particular block either – if you click the + button anywhere in the editor it will open a list of all available blocks, allowing you to search for the one you need.
If you want us to revert your site back to how it was before you installed the classic editor plugin, let us know. Once your site is reverted, I can show you how to get to the classic editor, but I really also want to encourage you to give the block editor a try.

Lastly, keep in mind that your plan gives you access to both live chat and direct email support. You can reach those at any time if you have questions by clicking the Help icon that appears bottom-right on all the My Sites pages, or else via the direct link at https://wordpress.com/help/contact

Thanks for the quick and thorough response, I really appreciate it
Let’s revert the site to the original URL, and I’d appreciate your help setting up the classic editor.
I appreciate your enthusiasm for the new editor, but as general feedback, I’m finding it cumbersome and lacking, having had a good swing at it with 10+ posts. Having to search for block types, rather than quickly zipping through formatting using the classic editor toolbar, makes formatting slower, hides commonly used tools behind a search bar, and thus inserts extra steps at every turn.
It’s also hard to do some previously simple things. For example, if I want to insert an inline image to accompany a bullet-list item, I can’t do so any more – inline images are now an “image and text” block, and the text in the that block doesn’t seem to be able to be part of a bullet list, which is contained in a separate block.
Previously I could drag and drop an image into the editor and easily click “inline / align right”. Easy peasy.
This is just one example of many. The new editor seems, to me, to be overall rather inflexible and prescriptive, and counterintuitive to use. Perhaps there are ways to do these things, and a process of relearning content editing – but honestly, I was mostly happy with the quick and intuitive classic editor.
I’m sure you’ve heard a lot of opinions about the editor change, so I’ll leave my comments there. :)
Thanks again for the help!

Let’s revert the site to the original URL
Ok, https://dotbigbang.wordpress.com/ is back to the old URL as requested.
if I want to insert an inline image to accompany a bullet-list item, I can’t do so any more
This should still work following the steps at https://wordpress.com/support/images/image-alignment/ :)

Thanks – the blog seems to be down currently.

Make sure that you’re accessing the site via https://dotbigbang.wordpress.com/ and not https://dotbigbang.wpcomstaging.com/

Thanks. When I click on the first link, it redirects to the second. Might be a browser cache thing… but if it’s happening for me will it be happening for others?
-
Hm, that shouldn’t happen at all.
Would you please try clearing your browser’s cache? https://www.refreshyourcache.com

Hi John.
I can confirm it doesn’t happen to others. The first link works for me (https://dotbigbang.wordpress.com/ ) and the second link (https://dotbigbang.wpcomstaging.com/) shows the message “Something unexpected happened…”
