Url not forwarding correctly
-
Hi there, I transferred my new domain (virtualworkingequitation.com) from one wordpress site to another (coming from another user account), but it is still forwarding to the original user site (orderlocal.nz). It should be going to vworkingequitation.wordpress.com.
Under the Domain settings in this account the domain virtualworkingequitation.com shows the correct forwarding site.
How long will this take to have effect?
Thanks,
Belinda -
It can take up to 72 hours. But I get the correct forward from virtualworkingequitation.com to vworkingequitation.wordpress.com

Hi staartmees – thank you for checking. I checked last night and it was forwarding correctly to vworkingequitation.wordpress.com.
It seems that I have complicated something for wordpress though, since the virtualworkingequitation.com domain was originally created under a different wordpress account. After checking that it the site was forwarding to the correct location, I then added a new CNAME file on the domain as I want the virtualworkingequitation.com website to go to a google site that I have created for now. This is what I did before and I think created the problem with the redirection going back to the original user site. Trying to redirect to the google site (following directions from google site support about setting up CNAME file) doesn’t seem to work, and it seems that there is code in wordpress to check and reset the CNAME reference. Not sure exactly what is happening behind the scenes but I ended up again with virtualworkingequitation.com redirecting to orderlocal.nz! I have deleted my added CNAME file, but still I am getting a redirect to the original site now and not the user account that the domain has been transferred to.
Seems to be a bug in the reset process. Secondly, why can’t you setup a new CNAME if you have purchased the domain from wordpress? This is very restrictive. You can only use the domain if you upgrade it seems. -
Hi staartmees, thanks for checking. Yes, it was working correctly for a time. I then added a new CNAME file to point to a google site (as per google support instructions) and the same issue has come back.
There is a reset happening somewhere behind the scenes that stops the site being redirected to google I think, and it resets to the original user site rather than the other wordpress user site that I transferred the domain.
virtualworkingequitation.com is again redirecting to orderlocal.nz again. Help wordpress! I may have to just get a refund on this domain as it seems to be a bug.

@vworkingequitation, to be able to redirect your custom domain to another site, you will want to follow these steps:
-
Hi @staartmees, thanks again for the response. I have sought support for this from WordPress, and perhaps they updated something – I haven’t been informed. But yes, it is again redirecting to the correct wordpress site again. I won’t be touching the CNAME register again as it takes a while to resolve!
staff-mckluskey – thank you. The domain was moved from one wordpress site to the other (and I think causing the problems I’m having now). As I want to use it with another site outside wordpress, I will probably need to wait 60 days and then transfer to another domain registry.
-
Click on My Sites – Manage – Domains – DNS
From there you can edit the DNS records of a domain that is registered through WordPress.com. You don’t need to wait 60 days for this option. Those records can point to the new hosting provider at any time, unlike an actual transfer.

staff-zinnia thanks for your reply. Editing the DNS record was where things started going wrong. There is some kind of reset process that happened after I created a new CNAME record. I have decided not to do this in WordPress as twice this new domain has been pointed back to the original site where it was created and not the site where it was transferred. Complications of moving your domain around between wordpress sites!

@belindarodriguez, but if you wish to point that domain to a site hosted elsewhere, you will either change the name servers on that domain or add a custom A record, as explained here:
https://wordpress.com/support/domains/#move-a-domain-name
What instructions exactly were you following?
