Url not matching blog name

  • Unknown's avatar

I recently created a new blog. I have a handful of blogs under my account. I’m using the free plan. Why didn’t my new blog’s url match the name of my site? The site is ‘Living on a Buck’ but the url is ‘anneryefield6.wordpress.com’. What did I do wrong?

    WP.com: Yes
    Jetpack: No
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can always change your blog’s URL to livingonabuck.wordpress.com, https://wordpress.com/support/changing-site-address/#change-your-word-press-com-site-address.

Do read the caveat because once changed, there is no way back.

  • No worries, anneryefield. We will get you sorted out. Do you happen to already own a domain using the living on a buck phrasing? I am not clear on if you need help connecting that domain or if you need help registering a new free site address.

Please hang tight on making any changes while we get you sorted out. It may be better to just register the free site address as you want, rather than changing the name. We will be able to best advise once we have a few more details from you about the plans and goals for this project.

I do not own any domains through wordpress.com. My problem is that any time I’ve ever created a new wordpress.com blog, it’s always given me an address that looks like blogname.wordpress.com. It’s never given me a username#.wordpress.com. I never had to do any extra steps to get a free wordpress blog with an url using the blog name. When I started my new blog, it should have given me the url livingonabuck.wordpress.com and it didn’t. I don’t know why.

I don’t understand why going to my Dashboard > Switch Site > Add New Site would change the ability to have a blogname.wordpress.com url.

  • Hey there,

What is the URL of the blog you’re looking to change?

We’ll do our best to produce some next steps for you.

  • Hi there,

I do see that site under your account, thanks for clarifying. Without seeing the site creation flow you went through it’s hard for us to see what went wrong there. On my account I tested creating a new site and the end result is that it used the custom address I specified, and not myusername#.wordpress.com

I created my new site from this link did you use a different method? If you can let us know the exact steps you took we may be able to spot the issue.

The good news (as @staartmees pointed out) is that you can change the address of your site to set it to ivingonabuck.wordpress.com. I see it’s available so I recommend grabbing it while you can. Just be sure you don’t need the address anneryefield6.wordpress.com again since it’s gone forever once you switch away from it.

The steps to follow are here: https://wordpress.com/support/changing-site-address/#change-your-word-press-com-site-address

    Thanks!

I did create a new site from the link you supplied. It wanted me to choose a domain, but I do not want to pay for a domain even if it’s free for a year. I never had to choose before. On the page you linked to, I clicked “Choose my domain later” as that was the only option to get past the page other than “I already have a domain.” On the next page, I selected the free plan. It is at this point that it assigned me the anneryefield6.wordpress.com url.

I have also looked at the link for changing the site address. It is not useful to me because on my Domains page, I have absolutely no domains listed. Thus, I cannot change any. I did not pick an upgraded site. There shouldn’t be any reason for this to not be working properly. I’ve created several blogs in the past with no issue.

You need to type in the name you want – “livingonabuck” – in the search field. You should then see the free WordPress.com URL you want in the results list.

    .

This would also work if you typed “living on a buck” in the search. Can you try again from that link and let us know if you still have trouble? Thanks!

I wasn’t seeing the option at all. But, on a whim based on a suggestion from a friend, I switched browsers. Then it showed up. I’m starting to think I should finally make the switch from Firefox to Chrome.

I do now have my livingonabuck.wordpress.com address. Thank you, everyone, for working with me on this. Sometimes, computers are weird. Though, who knows how much of it was user error? Probably more than I’ll admit.
