URL Redirect – Intead of “Not Found, Error 404”

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate your help, but I have not made myself clear. Please bear with me.

The problem does not have to do with the “domain” redirecation. What is needed is URL redirection. For example. Here is a link that is from my old blog. As you can see, the domain is “www.crsw.com”.

    http://www.crsw.com/mark/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=99

My new blog has the domain of “blog.crsw.com”. My domain rediretion correctly redirects the old domain to my new blog at WordPress.com, and results in the following URL. If you click the link above, you will get the link below – automatically. So, the “domain” redirection is working correctly, as you stated.

    http://blog.crsw.com/mark/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=99

However. Although the above domain redirection does redirect the user to my new WordPress.com site, it redirects the user to a page that does not exist, and the user gets the “Not Found, Error 404” page, which is not ideal. The post for the link above is now located at the following URL on my new WordPress.com blog:

    http://blog.crsw.com/2010/08/03/source-control-explorer-is-disabled-grayed-out-3/

What I need is for WordPress.com to allow me to map an old URL (from my old blog) to the new URL (on my new WordPress.com blog). This would allow WordPress.com to automatically be redirected the user to the correct article/post/page on my new blog, displaying the correct page instead of the “Not Found, Error 404” page.

A small bit of javascript would allow me to do this quite easily by looking at a segment of the current URL. But I understand that javascript is not allowed. What I am hoping for is a custom widget or addin that WordPress.com supports. Does something exist on WordPress.com that will redirect a URL?

If something like this “URL Redirect” does not exist on WordPress.com, where do can I submit a feature request? This would be a huge advantage for new members who want to move their blog to WordPress.com (or any WordPress hosted site).

I really appreciate you taking the time with this,

    Kind Regards,
    Mark Wagner

What platform was your old site on? Did it use WordPress software or another platform?

If you came from a non WordPress software based site then I think the 404 will be a “feature.” I just moved my site onto WordPress.COM and there have been some problems with URL’s that did not transfer as the files were outside the WordPress.ORG install.

You can submit suggestions in the “Ideas” section of this forum.

This is always an issue when there is a change in URL structure such as from your old style URL to the new SEO friendly URLs that wordpress uses.

I just had to create redirects for 200 old URLs to a new site I did for a client, and every time I check Google webmaster tools I find another URL or five I have to add. Not fun.

WordPress.COM is highly unlikely (read 0) to let you use javascript since it is not allowed here due to security concerns, but contact them directly and see if they have any suggestions.

For what it’s worth, I have posted an article on a “URL Redirect Work-Around for WordPress.com” here: http://blog.crsw.com/2010/10/25/url-redirect-work-around-for-wordpress-com-2/
