UR:L redirection

  • Unknown's avatar

    I own http://www.gilliessmith.org.
I would like people who use this URL to be automatically directed to my new wordpress blog http://www.gilliessmithmedia.org.
Could you please tell me how I do that?
I thought I had done it but it doesn’t seem to be redirecting.
    Thank you.
    Michael

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Michael,

You’re just about there! I see that you purchased domain mapping for gilliessmith.org. To direct visitors from that domain to your WordPress.com blog, you just need to update the domain’s name servers to these:

    • NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    • NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    • NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

You’ll need to log in to the domain manager at your domain registrar to make that change. If you’re not sure how, you’ll need to contact your registrar for assistance with that step.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

    Hi Rachel,
    Thanks for emailing me.
    Are you saying that I need to update the gilliessmith.org domain’s servers to NS1. wordpress.com, NS2. wordpress.com and NS3.wordpress.com?
Is the domain registrar the guy that’s currently hosting gilliessmith.org for me?
Do I just email him and ask him to update the gilliessmith.org’s domain servers to NS1, 2 and 3?
If you can be really really specific, basic, that would be great.
I’m not really a jargon dude.
    Many thanks.

    Hi Michael,

    Are you saying that I need to update the gilliessmith.org domain’s servers to NS1. wordpress.com, NS2. wordpress.com and NS3.wordpress.com?

Yes, that’s right. We have additional information about the steps for mapping (pointing) a domain to a WordPress.com blog here: Map an Existing Domain

Is the domain registrar the guy that’s currently hosting gilliessmith.org for me?

The domain registrar is the company where you bought the domain gilliessmith.org. That can be the same company that’s currently hosting your site, but it can also be a different company.

I checked your domain’s public registration information here: http://who.is/whois/gilliessmith.org

According to that information, your domain registrar is PlanetDomain, which is owned by Netregistry. You can log in to that domain registrar here: http://www.netregistry.com.au/planetdomain.php

Do I just email him and ask him to update the gilliessmith.org’s domain servers to NS1, 2 and 3?

In most cases, you will need to log in to your domain registrar and update the domain’s name servers yourself. Netregistry has instructions for how to do that here:

    http://www.netregistry.com.au/support/index.php?/article/AA-00262/0/Modifying-domain-name-servers-or-DNS-records.html

You could also contact Netregistry support and ask them for help with that. Here’s a sample message you can send them:

I would like to use my domain with a WordPress.com site. In order to do this, I need to point my domain’s name servers to the following:

    • NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    • NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    • NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

I do not want to transfer my domain, but want to leave it registered with you. WordPress.com does not permit mapping by setting an A record to point to an IP address. They require the name servers to be updated as described.

Please let me know if I can provide any further help with this. :)

I don’t know who or what PlanetDomain and Netregistry are. I guess I’ll just email the guy that hosts (he built it and updates it for me) http://www.gilliessmith.org. Thanks for letting me know that mapping means pointing. That helps.
    Thank you for trying.
    Regards
    Michael

    Hi Michael,

If someone else set up your site and domain for you, he should have the information you need to change your domain’s name servers so it points to your WordPress.com blog. If there’s anything else I can help clear up about this process, just let me know.

    Thanks Rachel.
    I appreciate the email.
Yep, someone else set it up and uses a server somewhere.
I’m trying to switch over to be more self sufficient.
You know what they say …. if you want something done do it yourself.
    Thanks.
    Michael
