URL Slugs
-
Is there a way to have more than one URL slug for a post? If not, is there a way to redirect links with the old slug to the new slug?
For instance, I would like to change the slug of http://www.italianiamanchester.com/ottenere-spid-dallestero to http://www.italianiamanchester.com/spid
But if I do that, every person I have sent the old link to, or every person that bookmarked it, will now see an error. Is there a way to avoid this?

Hi there,
You can update the slug name of a post from the permalink module:
The old slug will automatically redirect to the new one.

Thanks!

This does not seem to be the case.
For instance, the original URL slug of
http://www.italianiamanchester.com/comiteswas
http://www.italianiamanchester.com/comites-e-come-votare
or
https://italianiamanchester.com/2021/06/25/comites-e-come-votareAnd you can see for yourself what happens if you click on any of the latter! (page not found).

Hi there,
Can you tell me when did you edit this slug? Shortly after the post was published? Or did you wait some time and then edit it? If you waited a while do you recall when you edited it?
When I look at the site activity logs for your site, I see that the post you mentioned had the URL of https://italianiamanchester.com/2021/06/25/comites/ at the time it was published.
I do not show that https://italianiamanchester.com/2021/06/25/comites-e-come-votare was every in use on this site. Are you sure you did not edit the slug before you published? If so then no redirection is created since the slug was changed before the post went live
Thanks for the additional info!

Hi again,
Out of curiosity, if you:
- Create a test page and publish it
- After it is published edit the page and change the slug
- Now save your changes
If you rename your test page in this way and the old URL redirects to the new one, then you can be confident that renaming https://italianiamanchester.com/2021/07/03/ottenere-spid-dallestero/ will also work.
Also, if I can ask, why are you editing your permalinks? Even if the are redirected correctly by our system, this might cause some confusion with Google, so it’s usually best to avoid it unless there is a very good reason.
Thanks for the additional info!

Well, I would need to change slugs from their current form to a new one, and for some of them it might be the case that the slugs were set up before publication. For some others, this is not true and they were set up after.
So… can this be done for the former? I will test your solution tomorrow.
Answering your curiosity: because it is easier to link them by heart, I do not always have access to my full database of links but I do send these links to 20+ people daily, sometimes on the go.
