URL/Domain Question/Novice/please help!
-
Hi,
I am a new librarian at my library, and I wanted to help the library update their website. I am currently trying my best, with my novice code knowledge, and (thank goodness) wordpress.com to update the site.
I have a basic build of the website made, and we are beginning to get updates so I can customize the CSS and such. The board wants the site live ASAP. Long story short: I have updated the nameservers on my host’s (pen tel data) servers. I have made the domain of the older (hideous) site an optional primary domain for my wordpress site/blog.
Now I am nervous, because when I made the new domain the main domain, everything went haywire (as in: the site wouldn’t load, the site loaded, BUT to the old hideous site!). I guess I really am just too much of a novice.
What I was hoping was that when I updated the domain (hoytlibrary.org) and added it to my wordpress, that when you typed in “hoytlibrary.org” it would direct you to my new, slicker, wordpress site. It just didn’t go as planned.
Am I being impatient? Am I way out of my league? Help wordpressians…. you all are always so helpful.
Thanks in advance.

Actually I see you provided the original site URL, http://hoytlibrary.org/ , just not in a clickable form.
Do you have the domain mapping upgrade here?
-
And actually, http://hoytlibrary.org/ is redirecting to http://thehoytlibrary.wordpress.com/ .
-
yes, I am happy to see you two replying, I have read a lot of your advice. Thanks again for helping.
WordPress domain = thehoytlibrary.wordpress.com
Domain I am trying to get to be the new one = hoytlibrary.org <— this was the original URL/domain for the library… I was hoping to avoid trouble for the patrons and other librarians by making a “new domain”.thanks!
-
Do you want the http://thehoytlibrary.wordpress.com/ site here to show up under the http://hoytlibrary.org/ domain name?
-
yes, I have the domain upgrade. And I made hoytlibrary.org the “primary domain” but it’s a two step failure:
1) go to the site, site times out
2) refresh site, old geocities, frontpage hybrid pops up in place of the wordpress one and burns eyes.I have reset everything, for the time being to “thehoytlibrary.wordpress.com”
-
What do you mean by trying to get?
Did you purchase a domain mapping upgrade or not?
See here > http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/ -
alright, I am typing too slow:
what i want:
when you go to “hoytlibrary.org” my wordpress site loads.
-
The name servers seem to have been changed correctly: http://www.whatsmydns.net/#NS/hoytlibrary.org and I ended up on the WordPress.com site when I clicked on the .ORG name. So you are close. Been a while since I mapped a domain so I am not sure what to advise except to review the steps from @timethief.
-
We comprehend that. Do you comprehend that you have to pay wordpress.com for an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade? Have you done that yet? If you have not then we are at a standstill.
If you have paid wordpress.com for an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade then this is what you need to do next > http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/#instructions-for-mapping-an-existing-domain
-
OK, you will need the domain mapping upgrade that timethief references to do that.
Basically, you point your domain name at the wordpress.COM nameservers, wait a few hours, to as much as 24 for the propagation to take place (generally less than 24) and then you do the domain mapping upgrade and the wordpress.COM site will start showing up under your domain name.
-
alright, I apologize if I have offended you timethief — was mostly just excited to a reply.
I have paid for the upgrade, and I did follow the instructions. I just was wondering if I missed a step. Currently i have everything back to where it was because when I did follow the steps, when I went to hoytlibrary.org, the old library site popped up. I got nervous that I lost all of my work (which for me as a novice was a lot).
I guess I realized post changing the nameservers and the domain name, that maybe I needed to somehow delete the old (yellow) site, or maybe I was missing a step. That’s why I turned to the forums for help. I will try again.

thanks everyone. I suppose it was mostly an impatience issue. I appreciate everyone at wordpress, seriously. If it wasn’t for this site, I would be a dead fish.
-
I am not offended. lol :D It takes 24 – 72 hours for the domain name change to propagate throughout the internet after the name servers have been re-pointed. Thanks to auxclass and TSP too. :)

When I have moved sites I had problems with local cache issues, I saw the old site but friends that had never been to the site were sent to the new correct site. It can be a bit nerving when things don’t change right away or change strangely.
You be welcome and good luck.

In the domain mapping section, make sure that you have set http://hoytlibrary.org/ as the “primary” location as explained in this support document.
