use images from art site – vague info
-
Hi,
Web Gallery of Art copywrite info reads:
“The Web Gallery of Art is copyrighted as a database. Images and documents downloaded from this database can only be used for educational and personal purposes. Distribution of the images in any form is prohibited without the authorization of their legal owner.”
I’m still not sure – can I use the images in my blog or not? I wrote to them (WGA) asking, but got no reply.
If I’m using them in blog & other people read it, does that have to do with “distribution?” Is “Personal” just me & my computer stuff, or is my blog considered “Personal”?
Can you help me? Would appreciate it.
Thanks, MarilynThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Your best bet is to wait and see if the owner of the site replies back to you because this issue some times falls into the grey area of knowing if it’s okay to use.

t3ck: I’ll try writing them again. I tried reading some legal advice sites, but I keep falling asleep! :)

That’s clear copyright statement. Permission is required. Also note that they seel images.
Setting that aside, It’s sometimes possible to get thumbnail images of famous paintings from poster sites and backlink to them. Provided you are using thumbnail size (150 x 150) pixels, and backlinking to the source, then you can claim fair use for educational purposes.

timethief: Thank you for help. I’ll try again for permission, & also see about buying images.
