use ISP for (email visible only to moderators and staff) email address
-
I want to create an email account with my registered domain name and link it to my existing ISP/email, rather than using Google Apps. Is that possible?

Your ISP should provide you with MX records for their mail service.
Once you have those, you can add them via your Custom DNS panel: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/custom-dns/

Thanks for exploring this with me. My ISP was unable to provide MX records, so I have simply created an additional email using the ISP address — not quite as elegant, but a simple resolution that works!

I suppose, if you want an email with your domain, you could alternatively use Google Apps for Domains: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/google-apps-email/

Thanks. I wanted an alternative to Google Apps, but the information I got from my ISP doesn’t seem to match the format of the MX code in the WordPress support information.
I had mistakenly replied to you via a DoNotReply email @ WordPress, and wondered why I didn’t receive an answer, since you have been both timely and helpful in your earlier replies. I’m new to forums — now I understand that I needed to post my reply and questions here!
This is what I received from my ISP. If I wanted to create a domain name email in the future, can you explain how/if I can use this information?
Mail Type: POP (Post Office Protocol)
Incoming Mail Server: mail.charterinternet.com
Username: (email visible only to moderators and staff) (first part of your email address DO NOT omit the @charter.net)
Password: whatever the password is to access the charter email account
Port: 110
Encryption: NoneOutgoing Mail Server: smtp.charterinternet.com
Authentication: ON
Username: (email visible only to moderators and staff) (first part of your email address DO NOT omit the @charter.net)
Password: whatever the password.Thanks again.

I think your ISP is a confused about what you need.
They’ll need to provide you with just MX records, which direct all email functions for the domain back to their email service.
You can see some example MX records at http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/custom-dns/

Agreed — I read the explanations from http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/custom-dns/ and gave examples of MX records to the customer support supervisor I spoke with, who seemed unable to provide the correct information.
I’ll mark this post resolved and work with what I have for now.
