Use relative URLs to create links.
-
I want to create a link by specifying a relative URL: an URL that begins with directory or filename, omitting entirely ‘http://sitename’. In this way, when I copy the link from my private site to the public one, I don’t need to edit it. Moreover, if I choose to buy a domain name, I won’t have to edit all my links used to navigate to specific parts of my blogs.
When I used the form to create a new link (Links>Add New), if I omit the protocol and sitename (http://sitename) from the URL entered under Web Address, WordPress adds ‘http://’ for me and the resulting URL (http://filename) is invalid. Nevertheless, the example just below the entry clearly states: ” don’t forget the http://”, even if it’s impossible to get rid of it.
Any help would be appreciated. Much thanks in advance. Keep up the good work.Jacques

Relative links are invalid in RSS feeds. For example, if I read your feed in Google Reader, /filename/ would go to reader.google.com/filename.
If you do add a domain name to your blog, we’ll actually change all of them over for you.

Thank you for the information. It’s true that those relatives names won’t work when they appear in RSS feeds or in email received through subscriptions. Nevertheless, it can be useful to use them in your sidebar to link to some content you want to refer to. I wanted to do that on one of my sites and be able to copy them to the other one. I guess I will have to modify them in the copy process.
Have a nice day.
