Use wordpress.com theme on a self-install
-
I am transitioning a friend’s site from wordpress.com to a self-install of wordpress.
They currently have the “Shine On” theme and I was wondering if it was possible for it to be packaged up for use as an installable theme on a self-install. I can’t find anything similar enough and would ideally like to transition the site completely as-is rather than them having too many visual changes to start off with.
Can anyone offer assistance?

If you look at the sidebar of the “Shine On” theme’s Showcase page, you can download it there for a self-hosted site. You need to be logged into WordPressdotcom to download it.

@ustjenniferj
I cannot see any theme download link on the theme page and that’s why I tagged this thread for Themes Staff. -
That IS strange tt. I looked at the theme’s Showcase page before I logged in and it said:
Login to WordPress.com to download Shine On for your self-hosted WordPress site.
Now that I’m logged in, that does not appear at the bottom of the sidebar.
Hm. Waiting for a Staff reply.

Hi! I don’t see the download link on the theme’s page either. Hmm.
Here’s a link to download it for now: https://cloudup.com/cNl20vktf-E.

@sarahblackstock- thanks for providing the download link.
To see the extra bit on the Showcase page, try logging out or open the link in a private browsing window.

One final question.
Is this option available on all WordPress.com themes or only a select few?

@alexthegreen-You mean the option to download themes for standalone installs of WP directly from the WordPressdotcom Theme Showcase? I believe it’s only available for free themes, but I am not 100% certain that its 100% of free themes.
@sarahblackstock- thanks too for fixing the download link on the “Shine On” theme Showcase page. :)

@alexthegreen — If it’s available, there will be a download link on the theme’s showcase page. And some premium themes by Automattic are available for purchase for use on self-hosted WordPress sites on Creative Market here: https://creativemarket.com/automattic.
