Used to export all my content. Can't export posts or feedback separately either

  • Unknown's avatar

Perhaps some of our happy engineers can remember a problem I had (and still have) once.

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/cant-export-all-of-my-content-just-separately-posts-pages-and-feedback?replies=1

Since that time, I got used to export my content separately. One file for my posts, another for my pages, a third for my feedback.

But during the last few days, I can export only pages, and not every time with success. I have to try over and over again.

As for the posts and the feedback, it’s impossible now. I made a million tries. Every time I click on the ‘Download Export File’ for these posts or feedback, always I end up with this non-functional link:

    https://xyzcontagion.wordpress.com/wp-admin/export.php?download=true&content=posts&cat=0&post_author=0&post_start_date=0&post_end_date=0&post_status=0&page_author=0&page_start_date=0&page_end_date=0&page_status=0&submit=Download+Export+File

    What I should I do?

    Thank you all

    Hi @basilikimetatroulou,

It looks like the export file for posts is a bit too big for the traditional export. I’m happy to send a link to the download file for you via email. Were you just looking for an XML of your posts?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thank you for your answer.
Well, I need this export file and thank you for your effort.
But I’m used to perform this task every time I add content to my blog, even when I’m writing drafts. So, the next time what should I do? I don’t want to ask you again. This is not a solution, as you can understand.

The posts’ export file is about 26 MBytes. It is that big that kind of size? I honestly don’t know but I’ve talked to other WP bloggers and some of them told me that their posts’ export file reaches 40 or even 50 MBytes.

And how can we explain that the feedback’s export file which is only 5 or 6 Kilobytes doesn’t work either?
I do not think that the problem has anything to do with the size of the export files. Something else went wrong. Once upon a time, I could do it instantly for all three categories. Now, it became a big problem for me. I’m afraid I may lose all of my work if certain situations occurred (nothing to do with WP).

Can you please email it to this account?

Thank you very much, but I have to wait for a permanent solution, as you can imagine.

    Hi,

Their are limits on the export file size from WordPress.com. It looks like both your Feedback and Post exports are hitting this limit. As such, you will not be able to export them directly from your Dashboard. We’re happy to provide them for you if you need them. Could you elaborate one why you choose to export after each post? We save multiple backups of your site in case of emergency so it isn’t necessary for you to keep XML exports each time you update. You could also export just a particular date range of posts if you would like.

I’ve sent the XML for both posts and feedback to the email address on file for your account.

Thank you for the file, and it’s very relieving to know there are multiple backups of my site in case of emergency.

I’m facing censorship problems and that’s why I need an up-to-date copy of my work every single day.
My blog, as anyone says in Greece, is probably No #1 investigative political/historical website in Greece, and my work very often make some very bad people (like the neonazis of the Golden Dawn gang) very angry.
So, they try to shut me down, and they’ve succeeded it a couple of times, but only temporarily.
My work in a number of occasions had become book(s), and more often my stories find their way to big commercial mainstream media which they want me and my co-writers to go and do the same work for them. But we prefer our own independence, and this is possible only with the help of WP.

So, it’s very critical for me, at any given time, night and day, to be prepared and to be able to export all of my work in an auxiliary or secondary blog.
This has happened a couple of times in the past, when these villains tried to shut me down.
So. even when a word in an old post changes or been added, I need a fresh export file.

I understand. The best solution would be to breakdown your posts by date ranges in order to generate the XML file. For feedback, you can generate a CSV of all feedback here:

    https://xyzcontagion.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=feedback

As the size of the posts export continues to grow, I’m afraid you’ll need to piecemeal the export even further. I believe the date range is going to be your best option.

    Thank you jeremeylduvall
it seems you were perfectly right about everything:
First the date range option: No big deal, I’ve already got used to it. I split this task in two and perform it twice instead of once.
And then the size: Probably the content I’ve added this June made the posts’ export file too big.
I was playing around and I did an export from, let’s say the very beginning until May of 2015, and it was OK.
The moment I added June of 2015, the file breaks and the export function shows me the unwanted screen ‘File not found’.

I think I read somewhere (perhaps in an article about the import procedures when a user wants to move to a self-hosted .org or something like that) that the export file shouldn’t be bigger than 32 MB. Maybe this is the case.

Thank you for all your efforts :)

No problem! Let us know if you need anything else.

  • Unknown's avatar

Well, since you mentioned it, actually there is something else that akes my life a little bit difficult recently.

Can anyone of the WP happy engineers take a look, please?

    :)

  • I have replied on your other thread.

Good news – we implemented a new feature that should allow you to export your entire site in one trip! The next time you export your site, try doing all content at once. You should receive an email with a link to the export(s) in a zip file.
