"user does not exist" but "this one is not available"

  I’m trying to set up a new WP account.

  When I go to the login page and enter my proposed username it says “User does not exist”.

  When I try to create a new account with that username, now it says “Choose a different username. This one is not available.”

  ???

  If it does not exist, then how is it not available?

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  Hi there,

  This is happening because that username is not available. The previous owner of that username either deleted their account or changed their username. In this case, the username is blocked from being registered again, in order to prevent impersonation.
