‘User does not exist’ Error

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m trying to access sklugoospeaks.wordpress.com separately from the account it’s under at the moment (robertcday.wordpress.com) but when I try to do this I’m getting the ‘User does not exist’ error. I don’t have an email account or password associated with sklugoospeaks.wordpress.com.

How can I separate my sklugoospeaks account from my robertcday account please?

    Sincerely,
    Robert C Day.

I’m wondering if this is the answer:

    https://wordpress.com/support/transferring-a-site-to-another-wordpress-com-account/

I can’t see the harm of trying to transfer the account to (email visible only to moderators and staff) (where it should be – under my ownership) but I’m wary of the warnings on that page. If I do this, how will I get a password?

    What do you reckon?

    Sincerely,
    Robert C Day.

  • Hi Robert,

Right now the SITE, sklugoospeaks.wordpress.com, belongs to the ACCOUNT, robertcday. There doesn’t exist any account with the username, sklugoospeaks, nor does there exist any account with the email address you mentioned above.

Before you can transfer your site to that account, you’ll first need to create the account.

    Follow these steps:

    1) Log out of your robertcday account (or open a different browser) and go to https://wordpress.com/start/account/user/ to create a new username account with that email. You won’t be able to select the sklugoospeaks username, but that’s okay*. Go ahead and create the account with a random username.

    2) Log back into your robertcday account, and now follow the steps to transfer the site to the other, new account.

    3) Once the new account owns the site, that account will now have the ability to use the sklugoospeaks username, so log back into the new account, and update the username from the account settings page at https://wordpress.com/me/account

Note that when you transfer the site, your robertcday account will completely lose access to it, but you can always invite this account back as an admin if you still want to be able to manage it from this account.

Let me know if anything is unclear.

*When a username is registered on WordPress.com, the matching site URL is reserved for them, and likewise if a site URL is created, only the account that owns that URL can use the matching username. So the new account will first need to become the owner of your site, before it will be able to claim the matching username.

Hey kokkieh (not sure if this is your name, but it’s as good a handle as any),

Your advice worked like magic. Your instructions were clear and easy to follow and I have now freed Sklugoo! :)

I’m sure, too, that your instructions will help other people (and frogs) in this situation in the future.

Hope you have a great day (and life),
    Robert.

Hey kokkieh – this is Sklugoo.

Thanks so much for freeing me from Robert C Day. He’s a useful guy (especially when I can’t reach the microphone) but he can be a little overbearing at times.

Listen, if you feel like being entertained in two minute doses (one minute if you go back to season one) then check out my podcast at https://anchor.fm/robertcday. No obligation – it’s just for fun.

    Kindness,
Sklugoo (the best small, green, meditating frog you’ll ever know).

  • Hi Sklugoo,

It was my pleasure. Stay green ;)
