User does not exist – imported from WordPress.org

    Hi,

I’ve run into a problem transferring my blog site to WordPress.com (free)

A little history. I am paying a web host (Fat Cow) and I am paying for the domain name (PikeandSlippers.com). I wanted to stop paying this web host and transfer my blog over to wordpress.com seeing as though it’s only a fishing blog I wanted to stop paying over the odds to host it. I wasn’t getting any benefit from that.

So, I successfully managed to export/import all my pages, with pictures and text. However, my question is why am I getting ‘User does not exist’ when I type:

https://www.pikeandslippers.wordpress.com into the search bar? I know it exists, as I verified by email. Does it take a certain amount of time to register?

Is there a problem with plug-ins or the domain? I’m not great on technical stuff so a little out of my depth. For the moment I just want to edit my themes, get my front page looking how I want it and stop paying my web hoster. I do however want to keep the domain name as it’s not expensive.

Am I missing something very easy?

    Cheers,

    Cez

Thanks for reaching out. Your WordPress.com domain is wwwpikeandslippers.wordpress.com with no dot between www and pikeandslippers.

Once you’re ready to map your domain pikeandslippers.com to your site that would replace that URL. Note this won’t transfer your domain to WordPress.com, so if you also want to do that, that is a separate process.

    I hope that helps!

    Hi,

Thanks for replying. Okay, so there is no dot between www and pikeandslippers, got that thanks.

Will mapping the domain pikeandslippers.com be free or will I have to pay for that? From what I can see, transferring or mapping domains does cost money.

When I cancel my payment to my web host, it will delete ]the whole of my blogsite at http://www.pikeandslippers.com so I have made a backup as well as the import/export tool.

I am still unsure as to how to direct traffic to the new wwwpikeandslippers.wordpress.com once I am finished updating the themes and removing the cookery subject :)

Are you able to explain in a little more detail about mapping or transferring domains, how much this will cost and whether I can go ahead and cancel all of my web hosting.

Apologies if this sounds complicated, I’m trying to understand it but the information can be a little confusing.

    CHeers,

    Cez

Mapping a domain is something you need to pay for – but all of our paid plans will allow you to do that. You can see the different plan options here and choose the one that will best fit your needs:

    https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Then, you would follow the steps here to get started:

    https://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-existing-domain/

Also, with our paid plans, you get dedicated email support (all plans) and live chat support (Premium plans and up) so you can get one-on-one assistance if you need guidance and the best way to proceed with everything.

I would recommend keeping your existing hosting until you have everything set up and transferred over just in case. :)

    I hope that helps!
