user management

I’ve invited four users to join this private blog. However, cannot see the other three from all users, nor can I change their permissions. As I understand it, the user is invited, then they receive an email inviting them to join, then it gets fuzzy. Do they have to create an account first then go back to email to accept? Basically goal here is to have a collaborative blog for about 40-50 people who are not necessarily computer savvy to share ideas, files, as they talk about their work environment and how to do things better. I am trying to test it out before rolling it out to clients.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yes, the folks you invite need to have wordpress.com accounts. They do not need to have blogs, just accounts.

When they sign up for an account, they provide a valid email address. It is that email address that workpress uses to identify who is and who is not a permitted user. They need to accept your invitation via email.

When those people you invited log into wordpress.com they can provide their username or email address to access your site.

They also need a password—for their own protection and yours. Without a password, any tom dick harry or spambot could be impersonating them as they read or contribute to your blog.

Thank you for your clarification. Still have an open item. Why can’t I see from dashboard “all” users? If I go to invite new it shows those that have been invited. But it does not show under all users. Nor do I get the option to add user from community.

Have read “How to build a private collaboration site on WordPress.com in 5 minutes” and it seems that the screens for adding users are not available to me.

Could be a change in the wp.com software. It now says:

Use the invites feature to invite new users to your WordPress.com blog.

The invitation process is still the same, though.

I think “the community” just means folks who already have wp.com accounts/blogs.

Thank you again for your quick response. Why can’t I see all the users invited under Users –> all? Do they only appear after “accepting” the invitation?

Basically I want to create a private blog with all users as authors.

If they haven’t accepted your invitation, then they are not yet users. It’s been a while since I invited anyone and so I don’t remember if there is anywhere you can look for a list of folks you have invited (but have not yet accepted). Perhaps another volunteer can step in…
