I have two accounts. One is a professional account and one is a personal account. I desire to use the username of my personal account for my professional account. I changed the personal account username, but when I attempt to use the no longer in use username, the website claims that it is already in use. Is there a way to reset the status of this username?

Did you read the instructions before updating the username?
There is no way to switch usernames between sites. The correct way to do this would have instead been to transfer your site from one username to the other.
At this point there is nothing more we can do. Once you change the username, if you choose to discard the old username that username is permanently disabled, meaning no-one can ever use that username again. There is no way to undo a username change either.
