User name

  User name – I tried to set up a new user account as I was invited to author for an already established blog, however I still have not received my confirmation and can not log on WordPress. I filled out the initial request yesterday afternoon. On the form page, it state it could take up to thirty minutes. That was over fifteen hours ago. I am unable to try again, as WordPress now says the user name I am setting up is already in use. Why am I unable to receive the confimation and proceed with logging on? What did I do wrong?
