User Permissions for Pay Site
-
Hello,
This summer, I want to create a website to sell economic data on a subscription basis. While I’m familiar with WordPress as a blogger (malthusiannectar.wordpress.com), I’ve never used it for a more complex website. I’ve looked into using SquareSpace, which has simpler functionality for a novice like myself, but also seems very limited in what it can do. In fact, I can’t even set up multiple themes for different pages, which I find extremely frustrating.
My big question: is it possible to set up a subscription / pay site via Word Press? Is there a way to manage user permissions so that I can allow people to view data who pay a fee, but they have no other access rights?
I’m a bit confused as to whether this is possible from my initial readings on the subject.
Also, would purchasing products from a company like Studio Press (for instance) make designing and managing my website simpler?
Any help answering these questions is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

While it is possible to set up something like what you are wanting to do here at WordPress.com (will require setting up two sites, one public and one private), in my opinion it really is best done with a self-hosted blog using the free WordPress software.
Have a look at this Support doc and maybe it will help you make a decision.
