user role
-
Hi all,
I have set up a private blog (I wonder if “private” has its importance regarding my problem) and have sent few invitations to friends with an initial role as Reader.
Now I would like to change it?
In the main menu, I click on “users” :
– on the top of the page, it is for the sending of new invitations and,
– on the bottom I can see my invitees but cannot change their roles. How to change the role of a user ?
To go further, it is a private blog but I would like to share it with my friends.
My idea is to send them the link of my blog through a Facebook group.
If they click on the link, register on WP and access to the blog, would they be considered as “users” or “followers” (if they choose that) and next could I modify their roles (to promote them as editors for e.g.) ?
Or the only way is to send them emails invitations using WP with specific roles? Thanks a lot for your help!
Do not hesitate if you need clarifications,
I am completely new user of WP and I have read a lot of articles to try to solve my problem but at each time it seems that I do not have the proper tools (like no plugin, no extension, very few option is the parameters…)Celine
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there. Private blogs are very restricted in terms of sharing options. The only way to add someone as a reader is to invite them as a Viewer from Users ->Invite New in the dashboard. In order to accept your invitation, they will need to register their own WordPress.com username accounts (they can do this without creating their own blogs).
Pending invitations can be seen and cancelled from the Users screen, but once a person accepts an invitation they’ll appear as a viewer under Settings ->Reading. If you want to remove a viewer you do it from there.
There’s no way to invite people via a link on Facebook, but if you post a link to your blog they will get taken to the private blog placeholder including a link they can follow to request an invitation. Private blogs don’t have sharing buttons for social media accounts.
You can’t change the user role of viewers. If you want to change a viewer to one of the contributor roles, you’ll need to send them an invitation as a contributor. For those users you can change their roles, but not for viewers.

Most WordPress articles you’ll find via Google are for the self-hosted WordPress.org platform, and don’t apply to your WordPress.com site. The official support documents can be found here: https://support.wordpress.com/ And next to that this forum is the best place to get help.

Thank you so much for your reply, that helps.
Finally if I want to have contributors, I understand that the best way is to open the blog to Public (with or without indexation within search engines)
If I do that, is it the same process than the one you described above?
“If you want to change a viewer to one of the contributor roles, you’ll need to send them an invitation as a contributor. For those users you can change their roles, but not for viewers.”
Or is it easier? I mean can I managed the roles of each user from the User screen? Can I reduce the rights of the unknown persons, and extend the one of my friends? I guess you understand that I would like a participative blog with my friends..Thanks again

Not at all. You can add contributors on any of the four levels to either a public or a private blog. Also note that contributors can ONLY be added by a blog admin. No one can become a contributor without your invitation, regardless of the blog’s privacy settings.
Or is it easier? I mean can I managed the roles of each user from the User screen? Can I reduce the rights of the unknown persons, and extend the one of my friends?
Users, i.e. Contributors, Authors, Editors and Admins, can create content and make changes to the blog, and you manage them under Users. A user’s rights are determined by the user level you give them. Be aware that any user you add as an admin can change the privacy settings, or add other users, so it’s best to have only one admin per blog. See here for all the user roles: http://support.wordpress.com/user-roles/
Viewers can ONLY read posts and leave comments. You manage them under Settings ->Reading. You cannot change a viewer into a different type of user, same as you cannot change a follower on a public blog into a different type of user. The people who can only read posts, and the people who can create their own posts are kept completely separate in the dashboard.

You can do that with a private blog and viewers only, if that’s what you prefer. As long as you enable comments on your posts any viewer can leave and reply to comments on any post. Adding people as users is only if you want them to be able to write their own posts as well.

Ok but my point is that I do not want to add each friend individually by sending them emails through WP tools (as I do not have the emails addresses of each one)
My plan is to share the link to my blog via Facebook and to a specific list of friends.
And next once they are registered I would like to manage their access (from reader to editor)
Is this possible ?Thanks for your help
Hope I won’t disturb you anymore 😁 -
(as I do not have the emails addresses of each one)
As I said in my first reply, you can post a link to your blog on Facebook. If people click that link they’ll get to a page that says your blog is private, but it will also give them the option to request an invitation. You will receive their request, with their email address, and then you can invite them.
If you don’t want to invite every reader individually, you have to make your site public. Then they can follow it themselves without your intervention. Keep in mind, though, that then ANYONE can follow your site. Even if you hide it from search engines, anyone who comes across it randomly or via a link will be able to read and follow it and you’ll have no way to prevent it or remove a follower.
The only way to have contributors (i.e. people who can write posts) is by inviting them. No one can add themselves as a contributor on your site. If someone signs up to follow your blog, that’s all they’ll be, same as with viewers on a private site.

Ok and to conclude : by doing that
“As I said in my first reply, you can post a link to your blog on Facebook. And if I accept their request, can I next manage the role of each one in WP? (Without sending another email) -
And if I accept their request, can I next manage the role of each one in WP?
No. If you invite someone as a viewer, that’s all they can be. You can change a Contributor into and Editor, or an Admin into an Author, but a viewer is only a viewer. If someone is a viewer and you want to change them into anything else, you’ll need to send a new invitation.
Another way to look at it: if they’re listed under Users ->All Users (and not a pending invitation) you can change their user role. If they’re listed under Settings ->Reading, you can’t.
I know it can seem confusing, but focus on the idea that readers and writers are kept completely separate. You cannot change a reader into a writer without a new invitation.

Ok so my initial idea cannot work.
I need to send individual invitations if I want that my friends contribute (as writer or editor etc) to the blog.
Unless you see another way..
Thanks a lot for the clarifications! -
If you want them to be able to create posts, then individual invitations is the only way.
You’re welcome :)
