username and web address

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m not sure what I did but I recently changed my username and it changed my domain although the web address stayed the same. I want to get my first choice of username back but wordpress tell me it’s already registered but it still lists the corresponding web address in my account setting. It’s all a bit muddled.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,
Sorry to inform you this, but once the username is changed you cannot go back to your old one. Your old username is reserved and no one will be able to use it(not even you). This is done to keep you from being impersonated by someone else.

When you change your username you are asked to confirm that change, read more about it here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/

Thanks for the info. It is helpful however, I’m still not sure what happened because although I changed my username I did not change my web address. So now I have a username different to my web address, they don’t match and I can’t change one thing nor the other to make them match again. I guess I will just go and delete the whole blog and start from scratch.

Okay… i suppose the web address for your new username is already taken.
Even if you start from scratch you old username and web address cannot be retrieved. Maybe you should try using some other name.

I am also tagging this forum topic with the “modlook” tag so that someone from the WordPress tag can look into this issue and see if they can do anything about it.

  • Hi there,

I see only one site in your account, http://widefoods.wordpress.com/. The address of that site was previously spanishgusto.wordpress.com, but the address was changed when you changed the username from spanishgusto to widefoods.

During the username change process you were given the option to either discard or keep both the old username and address. It looks like you chose to discard both of them, so they’ve now been removed from our system and cannot be re-used.

It’s not possible to reverse the username and site address change, as @optidusprime has indicated above.

    Thanks kokkieh

I’ve have already come to realise that I made a big mistake and lost the name I really wanted. It is still a mystery to me how it happened because I thought I was playing around a bit; clearly not! So be it, I’ll figure something out. I actually own the domain spanishgusto.com. So the day I decide to pay for a website I can always revert to my original choice.

  • Keep in mind that you can set a public display name that’s different from your username. Whenever you comment that’s the name that will be visible, and that’s the name that will show as author on your posts. You can set the display name here:

    https://wordpress.com/me

And if you connect that domain to your site using the domain mapping upgrade it will also completely hide the WordPress.com address.

Use a Domain You Already Own (Domain Mapping)
