Hi there!
Yes, a WordPress.com plan is needed to use a custom domain on a WordPress.com site.
Depending on the plan you get, your site will also unlock additional features such as:
- Access to faster support
- Removal of ads (With the premium plan or higher, you can earn ad revenue with the WordAds program)
- Additional storage space
- With a yearly WordPress.com plan, you can register/transfer a domain free for the first year. This means if you already own a domain, you can transfer it to us (and we’ll extend it by one year after the transfer) at no extra cost after you upgrade to a yearly plan. Regular domain registration/renewal fees can be found here.
- Advanced hosting features (with Business or higher plans)
You can check out the full comparison here or upgrade using the link below:
If you’re not sure which plan is best for you, feel free to tell us about the features you need on your site. If you mainly just want to connect your domain, the WordPress.com Personal plan is a great starting point.
Feel free to let us know if you have more questions.
