how do i change my username? when i change it, it says it is already in use, but it is MY name (which no one else has actually) — so how do i get it to accept it?

If you are trying to change it to a username that currently exists, then you wouldn’t be able to change it to that. It would be better to transfer your sites into that account.
As for changing your site name, you can change a site address ending in wordpress.com by following the steps here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/Please note that the final step in changing your site address allows you to keep or discard the old address. If you are changing your site address so that you can use your current address for a new site, please be sure to keep the old address.
You may prefer to change the address for your site by registering a custom domain name. This takes “wordpress” out of the site address. You can register a custom domain name for your site here:https://lovewriterpoet.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

The problem Grace is that the “it already exists” is ME.
I need WordPress to look into this because there is a glitch someplace.
It is not connecting me to my own username.

I’ve had this user account for 4 years — it was taken by me. That is the point — there is no one one else using valeriemalla; it worked earlier today then said it was suddenly taken, which means it was my account but something went wrong.

Can you provide me the email under that account? The email will be redacted from the public view so that only I will be able to see it.

That is not the email under the username: valeriemalla. Someone else under another email registered that username. I’m sorry, but we wouldn’t be able to give it to you.
You registered the username: lovewriterpoet four years ago.
However, usernames have nothing to do with the actual site name or domain name. You currently own the domain: valeriemalla.com and I am seeing that here:

I’m not quite sure what you mean by this. Have you contacted the theme author? They may be able to better explain why certain features are there since they designed it.

Can you be more specific? Which page can you not navigate?

1) Security purposes?? what am I supposed to do with four letters of an email I have no idea how long it is or whether there are numbers etc. in it or even what extension it belongs too?? If I have some letters I’ll be able to verify the account. If you still refuse, please send this request to a senior representative / manager or head of department. I need to be able to access my account. Thank you.

I don’t think revealing one letter is going to breech security, I mean really, I’m trying to figure out which of my emails I might have used — obviously, valeriemalla trying to access valeriemalla should be some indication that I am not trying to hack someone else’s account information.
