Username Changed By Mistake
-
I changed my username by mistake awhile back and was forced to create a new account with a similar but different username, which I really don’t care for. I was told that once a username has been changed, it was impossible to change it back. I know for a fact that this is a made up rule. Speaking by way of code, this is in fact not only possible, but simple. Since I wasn’t banned or anything like that, there is no real reason I can’t have my original username back or maybe even merge my old and new accounts. Who do I speak to about this?

Blog names or usernames aren’t recycled. @Timethief, I don’t have the support doc explaining this on hand at the moment, could you provide the link?

You’re simply repeating the rule. The point is, WordPress made the rule and so has the power to make exceptions.

The answer this year is the same as it was 3 years ago https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/change-my-username-back-to-original?replies=2#post-1065585
There are no exceptions and the relevant support doc makes that crystal clear:
Once you change your username you will not be able to change it back and the old name will not be available for you or anyone to use. If you just want to show your name differently please only change your Display Name. https://en.support.wordpress.com/change-your-username/
