Username grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I just signed up yesterday. I chose a very bad username. In fact i should have kept this for the name of my blog because already I want to start a second blog and my username is not appropriate at all.

As a new user, there are many things I didn’t know. And i confess that once i start the process, I find wading through the help mechanisms time consuming and difficult.

eg. I didn’t know that i would be stuck with this username or that to change would be beyond my capability. (i read that what you do is go out, start a new email address, start a new blog, and export your old blog to the new one). This is a horrendous task even if you know what you are doing but unbearable for me who does not know what i am doing and hates taking so long for such things as this.

I didn’t know that to have another blog, one would be stuck with the first username one chose.

Why can’t they make the username changeable. Why not?

or Why can’t i just can the first attempt and start fresh.

or Why can’t can’t you let us set up a false start so that we have time to iron out all our mistakes – something that needs say one month trial period before fix it permanently or even let us nominate our own trial time.

or Why can’t we be warned of potential problems the first time we set something in stone. eg. when choosing a username, a warning – this username a) cannot be changed, b) best not to use your real name c) best to make it abstract to avoid clashing with your second or third blog c) etc.

The username displayed is changeable. Just change “Nickname” on the profile page.

You can just ditch the first attempt. Just don’t use the account. Why would you think you are stuck with it?

As for the rest of your questions, I guess WordPress just wants to make it easy for me to make a living. This is the kind of stuff I teach! Teaching you how to use the internet is not Automattic’s job, they just build the software.

Hi thank you for responding so fast. I was just coming back to say I discovered the nickname solution. That should be ok but it would have been nice to change it anyway and I hope my username doesn’t show up anywhere I don’t want it. Do you know if its public anywhere, eg in the url? I mean I don’t want this username showing up related to my second or third blog, if i get that far.

I think I read if you delete your account, so long as you use the same email address, you are stuck with the username.

Ok, so let’s say i want to ditch the first attempt. Totally wipe out my presence on this site and start fresh straight away. Can I do that with new everything except my email address. And how do i do it?

I’ve changed my nickname and even clicked the bit about public display but it hasn’t changed. I guess I have to log out.

If you don’t want your other blogs connected to your first one, you have to get a whole new user Identity, with a different email.

If you want to start totally fresh, you will need a new email. Just get a gmail or something.

The usernames in teh forums do not display the nickname. Only on the blogs.

Now you’re able to see how WP broke the billion members, personalcarer! It has multiple blogs with few usernames owners :-D

Hmmm. Ok. One tiny mistake made in understandable ignorance and you pay forever I guess.

I mean you can see how silly it is to be stuck with my username. Personal carer is not my identity. Its just my job and i would hate to be known throughout the world by this. My second blog will be a travel blog.

A new email does not really solve the problem does it. It just creates more work for me. It means I have to manage another email account. The last time I did that – with flickr, it cancelled itself from lack of use. I think the reason why i did it with flickr was to protect my privacy.

At this stage I don’t really mind having my blogs seen to be made by the same person, I just don’t want one sharing names with another.

I wonder why no one has successfully persuaded them to change this feature. I wonder why a fixed username is considered an inviolable necessity.

I guess I will quit this today.

Probably easier for you, but completely unnecessary.
