Username not linking to blog

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

My username when I comment on other blogs or in the Comments widget in my blog, do not link back to my blog. When you hover over it, the following displays at the bottom of the browser, “http:///” I tried updating my ‘webpage’ from the forums and it only works on the forums. I tried changing my ‘webpage’ to my blog’s address by going Users/Your Profile/Website and it is still only displaying “http:///” I’ve waited more than a week now and still no change.

Any help would be very appreciated. Thank you.

You can link your blog to your username in Users > Your Profile > Website; if you add it there, it should work without too many problems. The link won’t be retroactive, though; it’ll only show up on comments you’ve posted since you changed it. Have you tried making a new comment? The last one I see on your blog is from January 30, is that before you made the change?

If you have, have you checked in Users > Your Profile > Website that your blog address is definitely listed there? It’s possible the change didn’t update. You might want to clear your browser cache and try again, or try with a different browser. Sometimes that can help.

I had been wondering if it would apply only until I made my next comment which is why I waited a bit before posting. The comment you see on the blog was posted after my changes. Still nothing.

I checked in under Users > Your Profile > Website and the address is definitely listed there. I changed it around a few times over the past couple of days to see if the changes applied and it didn’t matter what address I typed in. When you hovered over the username it was still just ‘http:///’

I use Firefox. I cleared the cache and no change. I switched to Internet Explorer and no change either.

    :(

I just want to say that I cleared the cache again, logged out, logged back in, made a ‘testing’ comment on one of my entries and . . . it now works.

    Thank you, cjwriter.

As an aside, is there a reason for the link not being retroactive? Would it change if I were to ‘edit’ one of my comments on my blog and then ‘save’ it?

You’re welcome; great to hear it’s working now. To be honest, though, I have no idea why it’s not retroactive. If I had to guess I’d say it would take some kind of backend tinkering, but as avatars work that way when you change them, I guess it would be possible… so maybe it’s just not a priority.

AFAIK resaving your comments won’t fix it, but if you edit them in Dashboard > Comments there’s a section for the url; you can just paste it in there and it will work. Happy blogging. :)

    I did as you suggested.

After altering the latest comment, I refreshed the page and my blog’s address appeared at the bottom of the browser when I hovered over it. I thought, ‘neat trick,’ and did the same for the rest of the comments. However, when I refreshed this time, the first change disappeared and none of the other changes were implemented. I cleared the cache, logged out and in again and still nothing.

    O_o . . . o_O

PS. Now, the change for my latest comment is registering again but the rest are still the same.

Is it normal for the first post to keep changing back and forth when I only edited once?

Was it this post? When I have a look at it your blog is linked to your username just fine in both comments, but it’s not in the recent comments widget. The widget is cached, so it can take a while to filter through… it might be the same for the other comments.

Otherwise that’s very strange; you mean it actually wiped the previous changes? If you go to Dashboard > Comments, is the right url still listed there?

  • Unknown's avatar

Ah, I see what you mean about my ‘kusanagi’ comments linking back to my blog. It should be fine for the rest of my comments I should think then as long as you access them through the actual post and not the widget.

As for the Recent Comments widget being cached . . . I was not aware of that. Even so, I edited my posts consecutively. If the widget is cached, it makes sense that it would register only my first change at first and then gradually the next ones. Except that it only registered once and then wiped the previous change at my next refresh.

As for the url, I went back and looked at all the changes I had made to see if they were still there when I clicked ‘edit’ and they were. So, whilst the changes are there, it appears that the ‘execution’ of these changes is malfunctioning.

I think just about everything in the sidebar is cached, or at least anything with an image, so changes to the widgets can take time to update. If the comments in your actual posts are showing the changes now, then the widget should too in an hour or so. If it doesn’t, try unapproving a couple of comments and reapproving them or dragging the widget in and out of your sidebar. In the past that’s forced the sidebar to update.

I haven’t heard of the address being wiped before, so if that happens again or if it still doesn’t update, it might be worth sending a query to support to see if they can help. But hopefully you won’t need to; most likely it’s just that the widget needs more time to register the changes.

The ‘address’ for my latest post randomly changed a few times from ‘http:///’ to what it is supposed to be since making my last post here.

The good news is that I tried dragging the widget in and out of the sidebar and that seems to have solved the issue.

Once again, thank you for your helpfulness and diligence.

You’re welcome and I’m glad it’s working now. That was very strange for a while there! Happy blogging. :)
