Username question

  Hello, I just made a new website and it appears at though my username was auto-generated. It is a mix of numbers and characters and I was wondering if this is normal. Is this supposed to be complicated? What is the main purpose of this?

  That’s because the username shoaff has already been taken. You change your username yourself, https://en.support.wordpress.com/change-your-username/

  I am trying to change it, but for some reason, it won’t let me make my
  own specific one. It makes me choose from a drop-down list of ones that are related to what I am typing. And often, they don’t make sense or are random. Any way around this?
