    What is the difference between:
    ‘Choose a different username. This one is not available.’ and
    ‘Sorry, that username already exists!’

    Why do some news give one of those results and others give the other result? IOW, if it’s not already in use, why is it unavailable?

    Usernames and site names are essentially the same things in our system, therefore:

    Choose a different username. This one is not available.

    That is already in use as a site name.

    Sorry, that username already exists!

    That is already in use as a username.
