Users cannot access private blog

  • Unknown's avatar

My site is private, thinkingdialogues.wordpress.com, and users are having trouble accessing the blog, even after accepting an invitation. Also, the stats indicate that no posts have been published, when in fact I have published a post, and I can see it, but at least one user can get into the site, but cannot see the post.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

We Volunteers cannot view private blogs so we cannot examine what you have done and assist you. Staff can view private blogs and that is why I tagged this thread for Staff assistance. They will have to know exactly which WordPress.COM username account(s) are unable to access the blog. Please subscribe to this thread so you are notified when they respond. To subscribe look in the sidebar of this thread, find the subscribe to topics link and click it.

    Hi @colettekelso,

Are you referring to the site thinkingdialogues.wordpress.com? If so, could you let me know one or two usernames that are having trouble loading that page?

Regarding the post, it looks like you did create a post, but you marked it as private as well. Private posts can only be viewed by Editors or Administrators, not Viewers of your private site. You’re currently the only Editor/Admin on the site. If you publish the post, your private site viewers will be able to set it, but the post will not be visible to anyone else since the site is private. You can read more about this here:

Yes, thinkingdialogues.wordpress.com. The user who could not access is inquiryoutsidethebox. But if I understand you correctly, each post is categorized as public or private? So that if I mark that post as public, then the blog itself remains private, but only and all invited users can see the post?
So just make sure that each post is marked public? But retain the private status of the blog as a whole?
    Thank you!

Also, no users show up under users “all.” They only show up when I hit “invite new.” So I can’t change user roles.

    Again, thank you.

    Hi!

The user who could not access is inquiryoutsidethebox.

I confirmed that the user account you mention can load the following page:

    thinkingdialogues.wordpress.com

You can find them listed here under your allowed viewers on your private site:

    https://thinkingdialogues.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php

But if I understand you correctly, each post is categorized as public or private? So that if I mark that post as public, then the blog itself remains private, but only and all invited users can see the post?
So just make sure that each post is marked public? But retain the private status of the blog as a whole?

Correct – if your blog is marked as private and you publish a public post, only members that you have invited to view your blog will be able to see the post even if it’s public.

So, I would recommend keeping your site private and publishing blog posts as “Public.”

Also, no users show up under users “all.” They only show up when I hit “invite new.” So I can’t change user roles.

Currently, you’ve invited them all as viewers to your site, which you can see here:

    https://thinkingdialogues.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php

The user role “Viewer” is setup strictly for private blogs. Viewers can see your site, but they can’t edit anything or add any new posts.

If you would like to add a user in a new role that allows them to edit and add things to your site, you would need to add them again following the steps here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/

You won’t be able to change a current user role from Viewer to something different.
