Users can’t subscribe to WordPress blog
-
I’m using the JetPack Blog Subscriptions widget. I’ve tried subscribing two different email addresses. Each address received an email. When I click the Confirm Follow button in the email, a web page appears with the message:
Your subscription could not be activated. It may have expired, or the email address you subscribed with is not attached to your WordPress.com account.
Why is this not working?

Hi there,
Are you trying to subscribe to https://davidswanger.com/?
What are the email addresses you used to try to subscribe, and were you logged into your
swangdb21437b49bcWordPress.com account when you clicked the link in the email? -
Yes, that is the blog address.
I tried subscribing from an iPad that wasn’t logged into WordPress. I used the Safari browser on the iPad to read/subscribe. The two different addresses I tried to subscribe were:
(email visible only to moderators and staff)

I see pending subscriptions for your site for both those addresses, and our logs show we sent confirmation emails to both as well.
If the emails didn’t arrive, they might be in spam, or else they might have been filtered by your email provider before they even reached your inbox. Please check if you can find them in Spam or any other filters your email accounts might have set up. If you can’t find them there, you might need to contact your email provider, or your IT department in the case of the university email, for help.

How do I see the pending subscriptions?
I received confirmation emails and I clicked on the “Conform Follow” button in each email. I received the same error message each time:
Your subscription could not be activated. It may have expired, or the email address you subscribed with is not attached to your WordPress.com account.
These messages are on the Subscription Management page.

Hi there,
This is happening because you’re logged in to your WordPress.com account which is associated with a different email address. If you want to follow that site using one of those two email addresses you need to log out from your WordPress.com account before clicking on the confirmation link.
If you instead want to use your WordPress.com account to subscribe to that site, then follow this guide:
-
I logged out of my WordPress.com account today.
I’ve attempted to subscribe to my blog with three email addresses (AOL, Yahoo, and auburn.edu), and I received a confirmation email to each address. After logging out today, I opened each email again and received the same error message when I clicked on Confirm Follow for each email.
-
Hm, you have to be fully logged out of WordPress.com when you click the confirmation link.
Perhaps that wasn’t done fully?
Otherwise, please make sure that your browser is up to date: https://browsehappy.com/
If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.
If it is, please do these two things:
1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.
2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.
Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version of) you’re using if you’re still having trouble.
-
To recap, my goal is for anyone to be able to subscribe to my blog. I’m using three test addresses that I own to attempt subscribe to the blog.
I cleared the cache and disabled the Firefox add-ons on my Mac (I used this computer most of the time). I have the most current version of Firefox.
Then I tried to confirm each email address, and it worked for each address. Each address received an “Confirmed subscription”, and the addresses are listed under “Email Followers” in Jetpack.
So it works for me now. If any of my friends try to subscribe to the blog and have a problem, I should tell them it may be a browser problem on their system? They should clear the cache and maybe disable add-ons?
-
If anyone else has trouble, please let us know the email address and we’ll look into it.
