Users having trouble leaving comments

I’ve received a lot of comments from people saying they can’t leave comments or they’re being asked to create WordPress accounts/sites. What’s going on with this? I’ve tried to fix the problem by sending people invitations, but that doesn’t help. I’ve tried everything I can find. What gives? How can this be fixed?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Can you get them to be more specific about how they are trying to leave comments and what is happening when they do?

If they are trying to use an email address that is associated with a WordPress.com account, they will be prompted to log into that account.

None of them have WordPress accounts. What’s next?

    Hi,

I just tried to leave a comment on your site, and it looks like I was able to do that successfully (I’ve since deleted it). Currently, your settings should not require anyone to login or even fill in the Name and Email fields when leaving a comment. Could you ask the individuals that are having trouble whether they’re filling in these forms or not? If they’re filling in the email form, could you let me know what email address they’re using? Please note, the email address will appear redacted in the forums, but it will be visible to staff.

Wow. This is getting kind of complicated. Yes the people who are trying to leave comments are filling out the forms. Because that’s what they’re told to do. Then when they fill out the form, they’re asked to open a WordPress account. And of course, most don’t want to do that, so they can go no further. It doesn’t seem happen to everyone, but I’ve noticed that most people who have commented have opened wordpress accounts. I’ve had four people say they’re having trouble.

As for email addresses, I’m not quite sure what you’re asking for.

    Hi!

To clarify my previous comment, every visitor will be prompted with this form when they try to leave a comment:

As the site owner, you can define whether commenters are required to fill out certain fields (Name and Email) or whether they can leave an anonymous comment. Those settings can be found here:

    https://twocentsofsense.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-discussion.php

Currently, commenters can leave anonymous comments on your site (they’re not required to fill out the fields). I haven’t had a problem commenting on your site anonymously (without filling in the text fields for Name and Email).

The only issue I could think of that could be happening here would occur when the commenter is logged out of WordPress.com. Then, they try to comment and elect to fill in the Name and Email field. If the email address they enter matches one that is currently associated or has been associated in the past with a WordPress.com account, we’ll ask them to login to verify their identity. That’s because we tie their image to their email address. The login procedure is an effort to prevent identity theft.

For the users that are reporting trouble leaving a comment, can you ask them the following?

    – Did you fill out the Name and Email fields?

    – What email address did you input into the field?

OK. I’ll ask and get back to you.
