Is there a widget / form / link to page / etc. that allows users to register / signup for a wordpress.com blog, that either makes them automatically a contributor for the blog, or awaits moderation by an administrator who confirms their user-status?

There are four roles that you can assign to people who you want to blog with: Administrator, Editor, Author, and Contributor. http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/ If you’re a blog Administrator and you’d like to make someone a Contributor, Author, or Editor on your site, please follow the directions on adding contributors. http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/

Yes, i am aware of that.
But for this special blog we want people to be able to sign up to become a member of the blog. We are expecting high numbers.

The only process I am aware of is what I linked to above. If you wish to require a sign up then you may have to gete a WordPress.org install to achive that.

I just clicked your WordPress.COM username and discovered it’s linked to a WordPress.ORG install. if that’s the site in question then we cannot help you here at WordPress.com with that site as it’s not being hosted by WordPress.com and we run on different software. This is the correct forum for your software http://wordpress.ORG/support/

Is the site linked to your username the site in question? If it is then you are posting to the wrong support forum.

I already posted the only answer I could find that apply to free hosted WordPress.com blogs above. This is what Staff have said:

    Here are the key points:

Invites are opt-in – By inviting someone to participate in your blog, you’re doing exactly that: inviting them. They’ll need to accept the invitation by clicking on the activation link in order to be subscribed to your blog by email or use their new role (and show up in your list of users). Until they accept, they’ll show up as “waiting” in the list of past invitations, they won’t show up in your list of users, and you’re welcome to resend or delete the invite.

You can invite WP.com users and non-users alike – Our system will look up email addresses and usernames your enter, and make sure the invite gets sent to the appropriate person. If they aren’t registered yet on WP.com, the invitation will ask them to create an account before they accept.

Inviting works for all roles – If you have a private blog, you’ll notice things change slightly in that you can invite someone to be a “viewer” which essentially gives them permission to view your private blog.

    thanks.

    a follow up question:
is there a maximum limit to the numbers of users that can be added to one wordpress.COM blog?

    No there isn’t.

I don’t know what kind of a site you want to create. Is it possible that a wiki would suit your needs? A wiki is a type of website that allows all users to add, remove, or otherwise edit and change most content very quickly. Free wikis are available on the internet where you can create your own wiki web projects in minutes. Is it possible that a wiki would be a better “fit” for you?
