users vs. members

Someone created our WordPress site and didn’t do a very good job. I’m trying to fix things with our membership, but I’ve never used WordPress before, so please be gentle :)

I need to update our members files because we no longer have the function to update them individually (another problem for another day). According to the Admin files, we have 384 members, but 743 users, but that’s because there are 2 for each person (plus 1 admin). I know the numbers don’t tally — some of the ‘users’ are spam entries that I need to delete.

I exported all users using the export user data function. Then I imported the same csv user file just to make sure it would work. I selected YES to update the records so there wouldn’t be duplication, but apparently it duplicated everyone. Next I deleted all 742 users (all but the admin) and then imported the file. Same result — 384 members but 743 users. Only now, the members’ profiles are gone. When someone searches on our site, no names appear on the search page.

Can anyone explain how I get our 384 members to become 384 users — what’s the difference? I see a place to import and export users, but not members. I thought they were the same thing but apparently they are different to WordPress!

    THANKS!!!!!

What is the URL of the site? Unless or until we have it we cannot answer questions accurately.

To save time you can type the actual URL of the site you are referring to into http://whoishostingthis.com to determine who hosts the site so you know where to post for support.

WordPress.COM hosted sites and WordPress>ORG software installs on paid hosting and local installs of WordPress>ORG software have different logins and different support documentation.

We provide support only for WordPress.COM hosted sites on our servers and your site may not be among them. WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and you can read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If your site is a running wordpress.ORG software for hosting issues contact your web host. For software issues post to the WordPress.ORG support forums.

The wordpress.ORG support forum is at http://wordpress.org/support.
The wordpress.ORG login link is here https://login.wordpress.org/
If you do not have an account yet then click Create an account https://login.wordpress.org/register/ and if you have lost an account password click Lost password? https://login.wordpress.org/lostpassword/
WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page
