Userscripts for Support Forum Volunteers

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello!

    Considering writing some Userscripts (think Tampermonkey / Greasemonkey) to help out with the support forums.

    One idea is to screen scrape the main forum pages, and loop through the posts to search the tags, and then color coding the main page posts… eg: red means duplicate, yellow means admins have been requested etc.

    My main concern relates to hammering the server. Although I think would be relatively negligible, we wouldn’t want it to get out of hand.

    Any other thoughts / concerns / ideas?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    I have no need for them but thanks anyway.

  • @joerepublic let’s get more details on this too, possibly in that invite I sent you. Cheers :)

    How about this. I have a Userscript that searches all the posts for a specific tag…’typing’, and it adds a little ‘responding’ message next to the title of those posts on the main pages. Only volunteers that use this script will see it. Just remove the tag after replying.

    And for those not using the script, just coming across the ‘typing’ tag on it’s own would be very helpful. @timethief has the right idea with her ‘timethief typing’ tags.

    I’ve also have this script check the ‘Notify me of followup posts via e-mail’ checkbox by default.

    Hey @justjennifer

    You mentioned recently..

    @joerepublic just a kind reminder to please check the member’s profile page to see if a thread is a duplicate. Thanks for your help.

    .. yeah, my bad. Getting tired and sloppy :(

    However, I think I may be able to automate this issue as well.. at least somewhat. Duplicate posts more often than not use many of the same words in the post’s title. By counting the similarities, and comparing dates, it should be possible to catch duplicates as they hit the front page. Let’s find out ;)

    @joerepublic
    , If that works for you, then go for it. However, I can find duplicates quickly by clicking through to the member’s profile.

    For the most part exact duplicates posted within a second or two from one another are created because of a hiccup in the contact form in the dashboard or through the form in the forum. Otherwise, the user might get an error while posting and then post again with a slightly different title or content, or they might remember they needed to include some information that they left out of the original.

    Getting tired and sloppy

    then take time away from the keyboard and refresh. It can only benefit you in the long run. :)

    Also, and actually more importantly, looking at a member’s profile page gives you information like how long ago a user registered, which can give you an indication of their experience using WordPressdotcom, as well as the kinds of questions they’ve asked in the past.

    @justjennifer

    All good points.

    Just looking at this, there seems to be a rather large percentage of first time posters. Won’t be any duplicates there, and a really short history ;) Knowing one doesn’t need to check for duplicates on 75%+ of posts must have some merit.

    Use them if you want to but as I said from the outset I have no need for them. I always click the member link before answering any thread for the reasons that both justjennifer and I have shared previously. I can frequently answer more than one question in less than 3 minutes accurately and completely. I’m adept at tag searching, Google searches, etc.

    Reading what I posted earlier about duplicates, that could be an incorrect assumption. :)
