Using a co.uk domain for my blog

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi. I wish to purchase a third party co.uk domain to map to my free wordpress.com blog. I have some questions before I do this; I have looked at previous posts but it is not 100% crystal clear.

    1. If my domain is not hosted with you (which it can’t be, as it is a co.uk), what upgrade do I need to purchase from you?

    2. Will all my previous and existing content/links be lost, e.g., if people click on a sample.wordpress.com link and my domain has changed to sample.co.uk, will they still be able to see everything that I have posted in the last 2.5 years?

    3. Are there any privacy implications that I need to be aware of?

Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Hi there,

    1. If my domain is not hosted with you (which it can’t be, as it is a co.uk), what upgrade do I need to purchase from you?

You need the domain mapping upgrade. Go to My Sites ->Domains ->Add and select the Map It option.

We recently made a change that domains can only be added as part of a plan, but as your account is a few years old you should still be able to add the domain on its own.

    2. Will all my previous and existing content/links be lost, e.g., if people click on a sample.wordpress.com link and my domain has changed to sample.co.uk, will they still be able to see everything that I have posted in the last 2.5 years?

We automatically redirect all links to your free address to the new domain, so both the old links and the new ones will continue to work. However, sharing counts on your posts will be reset as we get those counts from the other services like Facebook and Pinterest, and they don’t recognise the two links as the same site.

You will also see a temporary drop in search engine traffic as search engines will need to re-index your site at the new address, but that should recover in a few weeks.

Should you ever let the new domain expire, your site will go back to using the free address.

    3. Are there any privacy implications that I need to be aware of?

Not on our side, but there are with the registrar where you buy the domain. All domain registrars must get contact information of people who buy domains, and that contact information is added to a public database anyone can access. But most registrars offer a private registration service where they replace your contact info with their own at an additional fee.

You should be able to get more information on that directly from the registrar you’re intending to use.
