Using a domain name containing åäö – impossible?!
-
My client has bought a domain name containing special characters å and ä. Now they want me to point it to their WordPress.com site. But when I try to do so, WordPress tells me that the domain name doesn’t seem to be a valid one.
I’ve tried using an IDN converter, but it doesn’t help…
Is there any solution to this problem, or does my client need to buy a new domain without these characters?

To the best of my knowledge WordPressdotcom does not support purchasing domain names using special characters. However, I’ve tagged this thread for Staff input as to whether it is possible to map such a domain.

Hi @linneachristina, we’ve been able to do this with a converter before. I’ll get in touch via email so you can tell us the domain, and if you’ll add a plan we can try mapping it for you.

@supernovia – thanks for that update. I was just coming back to add that according to this Support document, it was not possible. :)

Thanks @justjennifer. I guess it’s possible things have changed, but I’ve made it work with some finessing before, so I’ll try that first and we’ll go from there, updating the document as needed.
