Using a pop-up to automatically let visitors follow blog
-
I’m wondering how to set up a pop-up that does 2 things:
1) Gets visitors to become a follower of my site
2) Deliver them a free eBook in exchange for becoming a followerTo clarify, I’m not looking to get people onto an external (i.e. mailchimp) mailing list. I’m just trying to get them to become a follower of my site. Any thoughts?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

re: wordpress.com blog subscriptions
All that’s required to follow any blog hosted by wordpress.COM is exactly what you were required to provide to register here, and that is a valid email address that the published posts can be sent to.
Here subscribers control their own subscriptions and frequency of receipt of posts from sites they subscribe to. We cannot act on their behalf.
You can set up email subscriptions here > Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Follow Blog Widget by using this guide > http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/follow-blog-widget/
Widgets can be configured to appear only on certain pages (or be hidden on certain pages) by clicking on the Visibility button.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/#widget-visibilityWe have a subscription shortcode which you can make use of. The help page on it is right here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/blog-subscription-shortcode/ You can also include the subscription shortcode at the end of every post you publish.
All support docs are at https://en.support.wordpress.com/ where the search box is the most prominent feature on the page. Search for mail chimp https://en.support.wordpress.com/?s=mailchimp
Here is the link to the guide you must use for mailchimp https://en.support.wordpress.com/mailchimpAdditional information:
You can create a Subscribe page http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ add and customize a contact form with multiple fields, change the email address where you’ll be notified, and mark feedbacks as spam from your dashboard on that page. http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/Read more at https://en.support.wordpress.com/?s=following

Hi, thank you for your very comprehensive reply!
However, can I ask if it is possible to have a pop-up subscription request (not in the sidebar or as a shortcode or at the end of the post) that is not mailchimp (i.e. creates an external mailing list), but will add people as email subscribers to the blog itself (and will show in the blog’s subscriber statistics).
Thank you!

Have you read the support doc at Subscriptions and Newsletters https://en.support.wordpress.com/subscriptions-and-newsletters/?
If you’d like to give your visitors a way to subscribe to your list on your blog, you can use the MailChimp Subscriber Popup Form. https://en.support.wordpress.com/mailchimp/
Other popups cannot be used due to code restrictions. WordPress.COM users have code restrictions. No JavaScript, no form codes, except these https://en.support.wordpress.com/forms/contact-form https://en.support.wordpress.com/forms/, no tracking codes, no advertising codes, and no unsupported embeds of unsupported iframes can be used on any wordpress.COM hosted sites.
